Currently it appears that SMU has students with higher SAT scores and a business school that is well ranked in the US News & World Report as well as Businessweek. Do you think that with more notoriety from its football program, that Texas Christian will in time take that away from SMU? This is not to say TCU isn't a good school as it is. Just asking specifically about whether sports programs have a halo effect on the entire school.

Yes, I think it will have a positive impact. When Northwestern went to the Rose Bowl (and lost to USC) in 1996, applications increased quite a bit. I think this will happen to TCU, too. However, I don't think it would take anything away from SMU.

Northwestern is in quite a different category. It is in my mind quite an elite school. However the point about what happened in 1996 is interesting!

You're right; Northwestern has been elite for a while. My thought is that if applications increase even at an already elite institution, it could happen with a less established school, too.

I don't think it will "take" anything away from SMU, but yes, it will help continue to raise TCU's profile and number of applicants. Same thing happened with Duke when the basketball program took off in the 1980s and now look where it is- Top 10 university.

I think that makes a case for spending $20 million a year on the football program. I suspected there was a method to that kind of madness.

Academically TCU made a great decision by switching conferences to the Big East. Their peer schools will soon be the likes of; Georgetown, Rutgers, Syracuse, UCONN and Pitt. Also, TCU's basketball programs should improve considerably over next several years.

You're attributing Duke's academic ascent in recent years to it's prowess in hoops ? Really ?

Not in recent years- 30 years ago. It's been well documented- by the university, even- that the national spotlight on Duke bball is what pushed Duke from being a very very good school with a mostly East Coast student body to a Top 10 school with an international student body.

Will SMU be a top 10 school in 30-50 years? Who knows. But with the football program breathing life again and a B-School that continues to climb up in rankings (#12 ranked by Business Week and Forbes named it B School for ROI in Texas - ahead of higher US News ranked schools Rice & UT), it's very possible SMU can move into a #30-50 undergrand ranking in the next 10-20 years.
