Driving form Austin to Dallas Thursday afternoon and staying in North Dallas. How are the highways and streets looking after the ice storm? I'm a little concerned about making the drive given it's not going to warm up to help melt the ice.

Here is the number for TxDot:
Call us toll-free at (800) 452-9292 for current road conditions.

South of Dallas the highways seem to be the worst. Go to one of the local news stations websites like WFAA and check the live road conditions as well. The sports broadcaster for Ch 8 coming in from the south yesterday...... it took him 2 hours and 45 minutes for a drive that is normally around 35 minutes. Have a full tank of gas, a blanket or two, check your tires, if you drive a pickup make sure to put something with some weight in the bed of it like some sandbags or something. Allow yourself PLENTY of time and take your time.

Yesterday on I-35 coming into Dallas from the south the roads were at a standstill.

OMG, it's happening all over the state!

You mean it is happening ALL OVER THE ENTIRE COUNTRY! Parts of the midwest from Chicago to Ohio and other areas are getting hit w/ MAJOR blackouts. I'll take my 15 minutes of no power every 4 hours.

Anyone travel from the northern suburbs into Dallas on the tollway? I'm supposed to be at work at noon but I don't want to spend 2 hours driving in and then 2 hours driving home to work for 5 hours.

That's because those turns on 35, with ice, are almost impossible to pass through. I saw the same thing yesterday. Loop 12 at I-30 in West Dallas and the I-20 split near Spur 408 have similar issues.

I-35 northbound into downtown Dallas is supposed to be pretty backed up.

I would postpone your trip until Friday afternoon once the temps get above freezing. As others have said, the roads are absolutely awful, and DFW has basically shut down. There is no reason to come up here right now!

I turned around and decided to go back home. I keep looking at sigalert.com and the traffic has not changed between when I started checking (8am) and now (1pm). I didn't want to end up like those folks in VA who were stuck for 13 hours in their cars.

many people around here have never really been in extended icing like this
they poo-poo the idea of being stuck on the road and unable to get off or get out of the car or get a wrecker to you

friend whose SIL was going to work today in Addison and driving from Colleyville via the George Bush for the last part--
she made sure he had a blanket, de-icer, a winter type hat (which he normally would not wear) and a muffler/scarf--with some water and energy bars

He got to work--took long time--and said the Bush was awful...

I have not been out--have any of the TXDot screens with messages had any reliable up-to-date info about blocked roads or travel time???
