i see no consistent relation between tax assessed values and home prices... boggles the mind.

Assessed values are supposed to be at "market value". It isn't uncommon for the two to be pretty far apart. The good thing is, if you think you are over assessed, it's usually simple to get them to correct it. Just do some homework and get your realtor to furnish you with some recent comps that support your actual value.

It used to be that Dallas Co was on a three year cycle. So if the Dallas Co Appraisal District assessed my home at $150K in 2010, it would likely be the same for 2011 and 2012. So if there was a change in the market in the time since my last appraisal with DCAD then that could create a disparity.
