Can you just let your car tag expire or do you have to notify anyone?

Are you leaving the car here? You can let your registration lapse as long as you don't plan on driving it.

I searched on internet to give you an answer. It seems that as long as you don't use your car, it's not a big deal.If you are going to sell your car to someone else, the DPS will be notified that your car tag will be no more associated to the car itself. That's all I got.

Ah, well nice of you tell us that! Google the state you are moving to and look up their DPS regulations, each state will be a little different.

You'll have an option to register your car in your new state but Texas won't care. Texas will send you a renewal notice as they do each year. You won't be at the address, the post office will return the renewal notice to the state so they'll know you're not going to pay. They won't come looking for you.

Just don't come back with an expired registration on the same auto. You'll get a ticket and pay a fine as well as renewal for each year not paid.

Texas Vehicle Registration FAQs

Quote:
I am a Texan currently living out of state. How do I register my vehicle in Texas?

You must register your vehicle in the state where you currently live, unless you are a full-time student or active military member. If you are a student or active military member, contact the county tax office in the Texas county where you last resided for a registration packet.
Quote:
Can I legally drive my car after the registration expires?

Yes. A vehicle may be operated up to five working days after the registration expires without penalty. After those five days, you can receive a ticket of up to $200.
