I have lived in Texas most of my life, moved here when I was 9 years old. Grew up in south Texas, east of Houston. Hot and humid. Moved to Dallas area in the 70's and been here ever since. Hotter than Houston but much less humid. I am currently looking for a cooler climate to move to. The older I get the harder the extreme heat seems to be for me. I know the extreme cold is hard for us as we age as well, but I really don't think I can take much more of the 100+ temperatures. I love Texas for the most part but each year I find myself dreading the summers. Winters can be extreme - 80 one day, 25 the next. But the summers, at least in north Texas, are relentless heat. I hate walking out of work at midnight (I work evenings) and it feels like walking into a oven. Sorry to be negative, Texas has a lot going for it as others have mentioned - low cost of living, low taxes, economy and job market is better than most parts of the country. But if you don't like extreme heat then this is not the place for you.

To the OP --

The extreme cold of WI is traded for the extreme heat of TX. It's bad at first, but you get used to it. You'll learn when to be outside and when your AC needs to be on full blast.

Temple is in central TX, but it's not truly a "small town" atmosphere. It's smallER than Austin, DFW, Houston, etc, but it's still a good-sized suburb with plenty of amenities (and Waco, Killeen, and Austin are not too far away).

The only difference, in my opinion, is our extreme heat lasts for 3 months versus your extreme cold that lasts 6 months or so. I will take the heat over the cold any day! We lived in Washington state for 5 years!

(well me) Also, not a fan of snakes! If anyone can give some feedback, I would really appreciate it.
You are aware that Temple is closer to Austin and Waco than to Dallas?

It gets hot in Texas. What did you think? But people don't fall over dead when it gets hot like they do up North. Central Texas where you mention is a nice area with a mixture of weather. Four seasons but winters are for the most part nice.
Snakes? Don't worry about them.

As it turns out, I did not get the job. We have decided to continue with our home repairs, and maybe list our house next year. Hopefully the market will improve by then. Thanks to all!
