the whirlybirds should have the wider openings at the bottom--the smaller ones don't allow enough air to come through--
and to make them work properly you need to have enough soffit vents so the suction does not try to pull air from INSIDE the rooms through gaps in things like the HVAC tubes or light fixtures like can lights in the rooms of the house

we have no ridge vent because we too have an angled roof with a more narrow top line vs the wider bottom line--
we do have good ratio of soffit vents--even if we don't have continuous ones--and we have 6 or 7 of the large non-powered whirlyfans--

they are always moving--even at times when it is relatively cool outside--because physics says the hotter air in the attic will always be pushed up by the cooler air coming in from outside and siphoned out by the fans...

Default Hot Walls

As Dixie suggested it is possible to create a moisture problem by putting the foam boarding over a ceiling situation. increasing the R-value of the blown/loose or batt insulation would be the way to go on that I would say, without actually having seen the specific situation.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you do the foam board/sealing with foil tape and if it helps.

what can you do to better insulate the ceiling in those types of rooms--
can you put foil-backed foam board on the ceilings of those rooms as well?
