I bought my car when I was in college, but we put it under my mother's name for insurance purposes.

What is the easiest/cheapest way to transfer the title to my name? I know there are some options specifically for transferring to immediate family members and some that are "gifting" the car.

Any insight?

You'll still have to pay taxes on it. Gift or not- why don't you just add your name to the title (leave mom's on there as well) All you'll have to pay in for a new title....which is like $18 or something like that.

Didn't know that was an option--anyone know the insurance ramifications of that?

Check with the Tax Assessor/Collector office, and explain that you need to change from mother/father to son/daughter. I had to do this 15 years ago and seem to recall that this type of transfer did not incur a normal sale charge (taxes). You may want to see if similar provisions still exist.

Easiest and cheapest way is to transfer title using the gift tax exemption. Here is the form:

You can do this at any of the Dallas County Tax offices:
