I find it hard to believe what the Dallas Morning News is charging for their subscriptions. Just the Sunday only edition is nearly $15 per month while other major newspapers charge much less ( Miami Herald $6.00 / L.A. Times $4.00) for the same service. Even the option of accessing only the DMN website would run over $9.00 per month which also seems exorbitant. I really like the Dallas Morning News but I’m trying to find other alternatives for local news. Just curious how others feel on the topic.

This is not directly responding to your post, but it's pertinent. Once online news kills off print media, they can, and will, charge as much as they can get away with. I will very much miss newspapers and bank tellers when they are gone, and an internet hook-up costs $250 a month, take it or leave it.

The Dallas Morning News sucks. The only reason to even pick it up is for the Sunday ads/coupons. Being Jewish, I forgot yesterday was Easter and wasted $3 on an anorexic Sunday edition with no coupons and only a few fliers. Sucks.

I gave up my DMN subscription last year following a 30-year subscription. Same reason -- the cost of the subscription v. value. However, I do miss it.

You are right. That is the only reason I get it. I got the Sunday with Wednesday delivery and I believe it is around $15 or something like that. I waited until some of its reps were at my local Kroger so that I could get the gift card they gave away if I signed up. Considering that the Sunday paper alone costs $3, for me the subscription was worth it.

I doubt it will work that way. it will be metered just like gas and electric. Gas was originally non-metered, electric too. Eventually both went to metered usage. I'm sure/afraid Internet will eventually go the same way.

this is about revenue supply--
the DMN has seen its advertising revenue drop significantly--it never covered expenses from the subscriptions--
it thinks that by choaking off availability online and requiring subscribers to pay that it will be able to increase the ad revenues for the on-line editions--
think that is not going to work--
people can go to the tv stations online sites and get info w/o paying
and I don't know that DMN is giving so much story coverage that is worth paying for specifically that people will feel they are getting value for money

I saw a special on this very topic. DMN subscription is one of the highest in the nation. They say they are targeting a more affluent newspaper reader. They are priced about the same as the New York Times. What they fail to see is the New York Times is a national paper while DMN is not. They need to look no further than Block Buster to see what they are doing wrong. They refuse to change with times.
