Well THIS thread should keep anyone with any brains away.

However, to the OP, here is a quick way to gauge a US market.

Indeed.com

a sample >>>

http://www.indeed.com/jobs?q=chemist...C+TX&radius=50

It is set at 50 miles, per your request.

If you wander towards industrial, petro-chem, air quality -- there is some. But that is stronger towards Houston.

Right now I've just been accepted into grad school and am in the process of choosing my concentration of study. Right now I'm wavering between, computational protein chemistry, organic synthesis (most likely pharmaceutical), or analytical chemistry. Which of these three will provide me with the most opportunity if I live within the Dallas area?

Also, how many chemistry related companies/labs (pharma, analytical, organic) are there in the Dallas area compared to Northern California (just as a rough

comparison)
1. Forget what the naysayers claim. You can find a gig here - you might have to adjust your sights a bit, however.

2. A friend of mine just retired from UTSW Medical School, that place executes world class research in various fields of study everyday. Five Nobel Prize winners can't all be wrong. The school employs a bunch of chemists doing all manner of research. See the link below.

3. Consider what area concentration might help you segue into the oil and or gas business. DFW sports several hundred significant oil and gas concerns. Chemistry is vital of oil and gas exploration, refining and transportation for that matter. Regardless of the wishes of many oil and gas is here for stay for at least the next 100 years. You might investigate the "back side" of refining - as you know endless pharma, medical plastics, adhesives etc. spring forth from oil refining. That might lead you to work in Houston - I've know more than one person who worked down there but lived here.

4. A friend of mine is a chemist who works in the NYC crime lab. He says the pay ins't phenomenal but the work is - Dallas has a significant crime lab.

Good luck.

Research - UT Southwestern

UT Southwestern Medical Center is home to many nationally and internationally recognized physicians and scientists, including five Nobel Laureates, 20 members of the National Academy of Sciences, and 20 members of the Institute of Medicine, a highly esteemed component of the NAS. Faculty members’ investigations, ranging from the microscopic level to patient care as a whole, continue to bring about notable discoveries, important educational opportunities, and advanced treatment options for improved health care.

This is one company I know of located in the DFW area. HQ'd in Lewisville.

During the summer of 2011, BSI created a dedicated molecular lab in its 25,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility in Dallas, Texas, adding an eighth division to BSI’s Genomics and Proteomics department. BSI representatives believe that this will allow the company to provide a wider array of integrated life science services.
