WTF? He has a contractual obligation to stay until 2015. I wonder if there's a clause where if he breaks his contract, he's not eligible for retirement benefits.

I really have an issue with people that don't serve out their obligations. Obama stepped down from his post to take a better position; Leppert left to pursue a better position; now Hinojosa is going to break his promise, too. It appears public sector workers word can't be taken at face value anymore. Sigh.

I don't believe his contract can address his retirement benefits. They may address what goes in, but not what he can get out. I know with the municipal retirement system (TMRS) that once you are eligible you're eligible regardless of what the city wants. There's a ton of folks out there who are getting retirement benefits thru TRS and TMRS that have moved on to either other teaching/municipal jobs or private sector jobs and will be eligible all over again.

Oh and as far as Hinojosa leaving? So not surprised. It was obvious he wanted out and this was a temporary extension.

He didn't achieve his goals with Broad, he's facing a huge budget shortfall and he'd lost the trust of half his board.

Besides there's such apathy at all levels of the district that it will be tough to get anyone of quality to take the job. Cancelled a school board election because there's no uncontested seats? An unvetted person just strolled into office with no effort at all. Unbelievable for a district the size of DISD. Generally seats are uncontested with an incumbent in years where there's little to be fired up about. But geez! Isn't there plenty to be fired up about in DISD?

Getting someone to take this job will be a problem. I can't remember a time when everyone I know didn't hate whoever was "running" DISD. The board is a joke, no changes are ever implemented because the bureaucracy or bard won't allow it, and the Superintendent is blamed for it all.
The few things you might be able to get support to change - selecting decent textbooks, not basing everything around a ludicrous standardized test, etc are controlled from a state or federal level anyway. I can think of few more thankless jobs.

This is not to say Hinojosa has done a particularly inspiring job, but I really question how much can be done by anyone. This is the main problem with the ISD system where the districts and the city are severed. There is no other local political body that can bring pressure/threats. Sadly most people don't realize this which is why you see Rawlings photographed/videod in front of schools all the time, talking about schools. Same with both candidates last time. An honest mayoral candidate when asked what he would do about education in Dallas would say "F_ all. I would have no more power to influence things in DISD as mayor than I would as a private citizen

Maybe I need to warn my neighbors here in Marietta, GA of the storm coming to the Cobb County school board!

On the one hand, most of the DISD's biggest problems existed before Hinojosa came aboard, IMHO.

On the other...he hasn't really done much of anything to fix them.

I don't think that flies. ALL of the ISDs in the area are severed from the cities in which they serve. And that includes not only the DISDs but the PISDs, HPISDs and S-CISDs. Even Garland which has a similarly diverse socio-economic breakdown and a very contentious school/city relationship manages to provide a solid education for their students.

Coming from Cobb County Georgia to DFW 7 years ago, I can vouch that he is going to one of the better, if not the best, public school system in the state. From what I have seen of the attitude of the DISD, I would jump for it too, even with a pay cut.

However, if he is running from budget shortfall problems, he won't be getting a pass here. Don't know of any school system in Georgia that is not experiencing similar difficulties. However, it is County run, not an ISD and the board seats are hotly contested each election cycle. He will have a county populace that cares about its edcuational system for sure.

The Atlanta paper did report that his son lives in the area with his two grandchildren, so that might have some say in his decision.

Yes I read he is "expecting" a new grandbaby in the ATL. The Marietta Daily Journal -

Wonder what kind of reception he will get. I live in Cobb County and am pretty sure many will not be happy that the top dog is Hispanic.

What does his being Hispanic have to do with his abilities?

I spoke to one of my friends in Marietta last night. I believe they're aware of it, to a certain extent anyway. My friend also said Hinojosa doesn't know what he's getting into. Hmmm.

The Marietta Daily Journal - Reaction mixed on super choice
