I came across this interesting crime heat map for Dallas, it shows the areas where most crime is occurring with a color coding for number of incidents per block per year. You can click on that area to see what crimes have occurred. You can also filter what kind of crimes you want it to show, so you can distinguish areas with a lot of violent crimes from those with mostly property crimes.

The heat map you posted is a good indicator of crime, but since it's not weighted in any way for population density it can be misleading. An area with only a few crimes, but also few folks may be more unsafe then a highly populated area with the same number of crimes.
