If dallas is part of tornado alley how come the homes do not have any "basements" to hide in? Thinking of moving to plano and the homes we looked at had not shelters but everyone says they get them although none have touched ground. We also looked in Hickory creek, lewisville, Denton and they didnt have them either. We live in Florida and with the hurricanes but at least you know a fews days in advanced they are coming, Im a little on the fence of this whole tornado thing.

Basements here are difficult and expensive because of the soil and ground. Your odds of being killed in a car accident are way better than your odds of being killed in a tornado here. That would be pretty far down on my list of concerns if I were considering a move here.

There isn't enough room between the surface & sheetrock to put a basement in our area. Some homes do have basements or underground garages, but they are the super pricey new homes (like $4M++) where those owners are willing to pay the price to dig down that deep.

Yes! This is a great way to explain the chance of EVER seeing a live tornado in Dallas. Born & raised here and never seen one in person- except on the news.

I was also born and raised in Dallas and have never seen a tornado. Oklahoma has more than Texas - and Plano is sometimes called "Southern Oklahoma" so you might see one

Tornados should be the least of your worries

Most people have never seen a LIVE TORNADO. Most people see them on the news. But to say that they don't occur in the DFW area is just disingenuous. Just over the last four years:

Txgolfer- I didn't say that tornados never happen in DFW. Just making the point they are RARE and unlike hurricanes which wreck huge swaths of land, tornados do a lot of damage in a concentrated area- like half a city block vs an entire neighborhood.

I saw 3 wrecks today on the Dallas North Tollroad alone. 30+ years and still waiting to see my first tornado. OP should be more concerned with texting while driving and other behaviors which can cause car accidents than his home not having a basement.

The only major tornado in Dallas in 170 years was in 1957. 10 people were killed.

as I've said numerous times before...I've lived in the Dallas area for 36 of my 42 years and have experienced exactly one tornado...on the other hand, I've been hit by other drivers three times...

so guess which one I'm more worried about...
