While I was stuck in traffic on 30 near downtown today, it was glaringly apparent that only 1 car went through the HOV lane while the rest of us sat in 3 lanes of E bound traffic with little relief. With the lack of HOV lane use I've seen in a city that serves close to 3 million people, it seems ludicrous that they exist.

Every city I've lived in has had a minimum of 4 or 5 lanes on each side in addition to an HOV, if one was present at all. Has there been any talk of removing the HOV lanes?

I don't think eliminating them would do any good or hurt either one.

I do agree with you though. Dallas has some of the worst designed HOV lanes I've ever seen of any city. Those easily knocked down plastic pylons, moving concrete barricades, & faded stripes are a joke. The city should be embarrassed to have such a thing.

I think the HOV lanes are a dangerous waste of space.

Agreed. Also, the HOV lanes are a waste of money and should cease to be funded by DART. DART needs to spend money on rail and bus service ONLY. TxDOT should be responsible for HOV lanes. Duh.

TxDot owns those lanes & your tax dollars are paying for them. DART just manages them or trys to anyways.

I say reserve them specifically for Semis. That might free up a decent amount of traffic.

Well, it is a joint venture of both agencies. Yes, DART does manage them but that isn't without cost. My point is DART shouldn't spend a dime on that crap. Rail and bus service only.

I don't know about everyone else, but I rarely use the HOV lanes, even when I can.

Why? Because if a vehicle somewhere in front of you breaks down, you're pretty much screwed until someone tows him away. There's no way out.

Most commuters in DFW do not carpool. The HOV lanes are designed to encourage/reward carpooling. Unfortunately, they do not work.
