I've tried the ones in Casa Linda and Grapevine. Both were so bland and watered down DH and I just hated it. DH is from South Texas and I've lived in TX all my life, so we want good, flavorful Mexican food, and El Fenix wasn't it.

El Fenix is GROSS!!! YUCK!! It is bland, gringo, watered-down Mexican food!! I just cannot see how it keeps getting recommended here...
I just cannot see why people sometimes say bad things about El Fenix. They have the BEST chips and hot sauce, and they reportedly invented the cheese enchilada. Their chili con carne is also some of the best you'll ever eat. I have been eating there since the mid '60s (back when the Wednesday enchilada dinner special was 69 cents). For Tex-Mex, you can't get any better, esp. their enchiladas. But of course, I regularly eat at about 12 other Mexican restaurants and prefer those for other dishes.

But if it's Wednesday and we're hungry for enchiladas, you won't be able to keep me away from El Fenix. There is a reason they've been around for so long.

My mother, who was born in Pennsylvania and thinks Heinz ketchup is spicy, loves El Fenix. I guess it is people like her who keep the place open...

Mariano's is a great suggestion. Got to Matt's if you want mediocre food; their patio is nice, but not in this weather (and inside blows).

I love El Fenix - it is a Dallas tradition - especially on Wednesday's when the enchilada dinner special is served. I usually go Downtown but sometimes to NW Highway and Hillcrest and Casa Linda. I went to the Addison one a year or so ago and it was bad...the old NorthPark location was also good as one of the family members (what was that lady's name, I can see her like it was yesterday - she has since passed away) ran the show. Alfred was always in charge downtown.

Being "spicy" does not necessarily mean or define good Mexican food. Some is, some isn't. I am a native Texan who is familar with dozens of authentic Mexican food and Tex-Mex restaurants.
