Hey, I watch House Hunters! I can't tell you how many times my husband and I have falling out of our chairs laughing at some pitiful, tiny little condo in San Francisco, which is 1/3 the size of our house, and 3-4X the price! We are very, very spoiled here, housing wise.

"I love Dallas because it’s a place that opens its arms to newcomers and says, “Welcome. Howdy. C’mon in!” If you are willing to roll up your sleeves, get involved, and give of either your time or money, you can move in any circle you choose. Only in Dallas could a fledgling young “nobody” receive such red-carpet treatment by all of the mogul “somebodies.” "

-Stanley Marcus

Now to me THAT's a reason to move to a place, or to be with family, or for career advancement. But Cheap??!! Well, if in fact it is cheap someone please show me where. I have covered alot of ground and yet to find that part of DFW.

I lived in Boston before moving to Dallas. I had a 3 bdr appartment that I shared with 2 roomates that was 2200 a month and now I have a 2200 sq.ft. house for 1100 a month. Property taxes were 4500 a year, texas is 3500 which is kinda high ( I live in Rowlett) Sales tax is a little high but not that bad. I think you get more for your money down here. I made 60k in boston and had to rent make 40k in dallas and own my own home. Utilities arent that bad beats having to pay for oil in the winter. I have big problems with this survey no way could it be right.

I agree with you for the most part, but heating a home is alot easier to do than cooling one. Overall though I think there are things that negate those costs like you mentioned, also not having income tax helps quite a bit!

Real Estate in Boston or greater Boston in a decent suburb is freaking absurd.

Yep my 23 year old nephew moved to San Francisco because he wanted a change of scenery. I told him there is nothing wrong with moving but why move to expensive San Francisco. He survived 2 years there. His rent was $2,200 which is about what me and his dad pay for mortgages combined.

This was funny....
"two things to be said for Dallas: housing is relatively inexpensive, and it has more charm then Amarillo, which has all the charm of living inside a giant cardboard box that has been rained on and then dried out."

That depends on where you live. Heating oil is expensive and the average house in MA will use 800-1000 gallons for a 5-month season, which would be $2,800-$3,500 for 5 months.

The rental market right now is insane. Our nephew just moved into their current apt almost a year ago. Last week they got notice their rent was going up 10% For a small 2 bedroom apt for the 4 of them. After crunching numbers with them they are talking to a mortgage banker next week and going to start looking at houses. They can get a 3/2 for less than their rent is and both have steady jobs/incomes with future pay increases likely after his wife finishes her RN schooling next year. They are not looking for the 3000 sq ft mega house on the prarie either but about a 20-25 year old 3/2 that they can update as they go
