Hello all. I am making a drive from Los Angeles to Dallas at the end of this month. I lived in Dallas for 18 years and am making the trip home from school out here in LA... I am driving by myself, and really do not want to mess around and get there as soon as I can. I am leaving July 28 around 10 a.m. (right when I am let out of my last class). I'm driving a 2007 Ford Explorer that runs pretty well. I plan on making this trip in 1 1/2 to 2 days. I was wondering which route would be better to take. The 10 or the 40. Remember, this is the summer and it is really hot. I made the trip last spring when it was considerably cooler using the 10, but it was with a couple of other people and I didn't do much driving. So what is the best way to go? Thanks.

Go I-40........Easier , better route....I drive to So and No California a lot. I usually take 99 down from Modesto area to 58 over Tehachapi thru mojave to I-40 then at Amarillo take 287........to whatever road you need to the part of DFW you're going to.....

Agreed. I have done bot 10 and 40. The problem with 10 is a couple of things: 1. you spend a lot of time in the desert, which, in August will be both unpleasant and hard on your car. 2. East of Tuscon for quite a ways, there is vast nothingness. The same thing happens east of El Paso all the way through creepy and ugly west Texas.
The 40 is more interesting, although a little out of the way to catch from LA to DFW

Google Maps indicates IH-40 as the preferred route due to it being five miles shorter and less driving time. IOWs, there really is very little difference in the routes.

I too prefer IH-40 simply for the fact that it's more scenic on the stretch through AZ, being in pine forests on either side of Flagstaff for awhile. And the route is somewhat cooler in August, especially if daytime thunderstorm activity occurs, as it is "supposed to" during the monsoon season in that region.

I-40 in the summer, I-10 in the winter. Just as simple as that.
