I prefer cable over satellite. I had many problems with Directv. They owed me $500 that was charged wrongly to my credit card and it took 3 months of constant calling and bitching to finally get reimbursed. I never used the Uverse or fios but have heard good things.

Which cable provider do you use?

I used DirecTV in Dallas for five years with no problems whatever. There was an occasional rain fade but I'd rather watch the rain than most TV so it was like a 'rain alert' for me.

I've also used TimeWarner for five years with no problems. They have dropped a couple of channels over the years but I couldn't tell you which ones... goes to show how much that mattered to me. TimeWarner does use RoadRunner for internet. I have the 15 meg download with Turbo. It really is 8 meg download with Turbo boost. Downloading a file, the first ten megs will download at Turbo, the rest of the file at 8 meg. Not sure I need the boost for anything so I should save the ten bucks. I do a lot of streaming - Netflix, Hulu, online TV programming from my PC to TV. ATT is going to start charging for excessive streaming (like over 150G +/-).

If you get satellite, you'd still need phone or internet.
If you get FiOS or Time Warner, they'll all three. Verizon without FiOS probably doesn't include TV. So, for me the TimeWarner Internet/cable package is good, phone is optional.

I just moved here as well and did a ton of research related to your question.

The general consensus that I've seen online is that Verizon Fios is best and AT&T Uverse is second. Most people hate Time Warner.

I went with Uverse because Fios was not available in my area. Interestingly enough, my AT&T installation technician told me privately that he's a gamer and that he personally has Fios because it has the best consistent speeds.

I have phone/internet/tv via Uverse. Currently the internet is fine. I get about 9-11 Mbps, which is plenty fast for watching movies, downloading audiobooks, etc.

Some cons: Uverse has a data limit at 250 GB. AT&T hasn't started enforcing it yet, but it will soon. While 250 GB is a pretty high limit, and you won't run into it unless you're downloading like 2-3 HD movies a day, I still don't like the idea of having a cap.

The phone service isn't that good. People keep telling me that they can't hear us that well. The TV is great, though I don't watch TV so I have to take my family member's word for it.

Time Warner Road Runner internet is great. Installation is outsourced and sucks - it took four appointments (including one no-show) to get everything installed and working correctly. TV has good selection and finally a decent number of HD channels (just lacking a few that I would like), but the ancient guide software is terrible on their boxes (sometimes takes waaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy too long to simply change channels -- but hopefully will be getting better with the new whole house DVRs).
