It was front page news.

I don't want to diminish criminal activity. I was shocked by the story myself. But I do wonder how much violent crime that there really is in the area. I looked at the link provided by the OP and didn't see any random acts of violence. The offenses listed as assault were committed by persons known to the victim. Many of them were harassing text messages or phone calls listed as assault and others were family violence (which is horrible but not a random act of violence you can blame on the area). The thefts were mainly shoplifting. Since you say that you couldn't find a police report or a news story involving this incident, when there obviously was a lot of coverage, it makes me wonder whether your perceptions about crime are accurate. You may be completely accurate. Or you may be basing your decision off of fear, conjecture and incomplete data. I don't know.

Good neighbors liberally call the police about anything and look out for one another. I don't live in the M-Streets -- so I can't judge. But for as long as you do live there, call the police about any suspicious person, vehicle, and get to know your neighbors. Contact the M-Streets Crime Watch group for more information: http://www.mstreets.org/crimewatch.asp. You can sign up to get email updates about crime in the area, which will help you know what is really going on in the M-Streets. Coming from my Park Cities rearing, I assumed there would be more crime in Dallas than there really was. When I got the crime reports for my area, I was very pleasantly surprised. I hope you will be as well.

I would never, ever have a loaded gun in the house with children. And if the gun is unloaded and properly locked away in a gun safe in the basement with the bullets locked away somewhere else, it would take a lot longer than 12 seconds to get to it. Of course, I'm not someone who lives in fear of thugs.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think the M-streets are crime-infested ghettoes. But the property crime rate there is probably higher than many might assume. It's not like we don't have property crime in Richardson either. We do. It's everywhere.

Here in the big bad city, my neighbors have a key to my house in case of emergency, I know everyone on the street by sight or name, and I frequently leave my door unlocked.

I've never had so much as a potted plant stolen. I don't know anyone who has a gun. Why is it that I suspect it's the people who live in isolated McMansion neighborhoods who are the most afraid?

Some people choose the method of sheltering their children while others choose to educate their kids. I have chosen the method of education for our child and trust him around firearms more than most adults I know. This is not saying i allow our son unsupervised access to a firearm. I don't! My preferred home defense weapon is a hand gun which is kept in a small personal gun safe inside my dresser. There is two ways of opening the device, a touch screen combination key pad and a key. The key pad is easily viewed at night and takes a second to unlock for anyone with the combination.

Anyhow, eliminate emotions and political non-sense and you will see more kids are killed in back yard swimming pools every year than with firearms...all due to parents lack of educating their children on how to swim.

Google accidental firearm deaths for children. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that people not have guns in the home for children's safety. I will never, never understand this climate of fear that leads people to have guns around children to protect against ... what? Some masked intruder breaking into your McMansion? You really think that's going to happen?
