Another example of when some people ruin it for everyone else. Sorry this happened to you but it does sound like, as TurtleCreek pointed out, maybe the landlord has been burned before. I probably wouldn't live there for fear of future hassles.

I wasn't asked for anything except my passport; they never said anything about my immigration status but I guess that is what the passport was requested for besides. I don't think they even ran a credit-check on me. I told them upfront that I have been in US for 6 months now so I don't have a credit-history. They were perfectly fine with that and said, "No credit history is better then a bad credit history!".

I am from India and this happened in Hidden Ridge, Irving.

b) employment records from previous employers

The only thing they seem to have forgotten to check were my Grad school GPAs, medical history and Tax records... maybe those will follow soon after I move there.

Is this a perfectly normal practice in Dallas ? Do US citizens have to give info about their passports or is this nice, welcoming treatment reserved only for "foreigners"/people who "look like foreigners" only ? Why ask the employer to discuss if I have a history of crime/drugs and make the leasing contingent only if the employer calls them to clear you of any negatives they've thunk about you ?

I know I will get some "go back to wherever you come from if you dont like the laws here " retorts simply for asking these questions, but I wanna know just the same - preferably from some non-jingoist Dallasites/Dallasians/ whatever who can explain the rationale behind the extraordinary-scrutiny of ordinary law abiding non-white person in this manner.
This is common practice if you're renting in an upper scale gated apartment community.

The cheaper ones don't care who they rent to.
