"Well, there is a lot of fat to cut from our public schools, especially those in our biggest urban areas like Houston and Dallas. I am concerned that some the highly diverse Magnet public schools in this city are becoming hotbeds for liberalism. Do we really need free school bus service, Black History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, Asian-Pacific Heritage Month, ESL, special needs and enrichment programs like music, art or math Olympiad? I think we should get back to the basics of the three Rs, reading writing and arithmetic. I mean when is the last time a 6th grade science fair project yielded a cure for a disease?"

"I really don't see why high schools should have to teach college level courses like calculus, economics, physics, chemistry or biology. Not all children go to college anyway. Texas has plenty of on the job training programs that teach skills and trades. Oil field workers need to know how to operate machines that extract oil. They don't need calculus to do their job."

"I have no problem if curriculum specialists and teachers decide to replace language arts and literature with bible study. The Christian learning center's students will have to do quite a bit of praying once they graduate and enter the global market place."

As a physician I am all for Obama's plan, I don't think it goes nearly far enough to cut out insurance companies, but it is a start!

It's the internet.

Certainly lots of people would rather have discussions like this hidden than have to challenge themselves with varying opinions.

I'd rather participate in vigorous debate in the appropriate forum.

And that's pretty much all there is. This dichotomy that there is a right and a left in the US is a false one. If you read widely on politics within several European countries (UK, France, Germany, Spain), you see a much wider range of discussion on policies. You have extremes there, but there is a much broader middle. The discussion here falls moderate to right to far right.

Asking whether someone prefers Euro/Canadian socialism does not move the discussion. By saying that other countries have additional discussion to the left of center does not mean that everyone there is far to the right. There is a lot of range between the center and the left. But that range is not included in the political discussion in the US. It is as though as soon as someone steps ever so slightly left of center, the response is that they are suddenly dropping into the abyss of communism. And I think that is a radical response. I don't see that kind of reaction in the European political discussions.

The problem is that the right-wing media in our country is so ramped up and extreme that the people who get their news from these radio shows and TV stations are extremely paranoid. Anyone who suggests single payer healthcare isn't just wrong--he or she is a die hard communist. I actually watched a Glenn Beck show where he portrayed Rockefeller Center as a bastion for communists because of the art deco sculpture.
