I had an accident in April with my car. I am still covered under my parent's policy because it is way cheaper and the company didn't take issue. DH and his car are covered under his parent's insurance for the same reason. I was expecting a bump in my insurance due to the accident, but MIL called me today because their insurance policy is being charged a surcharge for my accident with my car--all damages were paid by my insurer.

News to me: I'm on their policy as a driver, but my car isn't. Apparently the fee follows the driver and since I have Liberty Mutual and they have State Farm I get hit twice.

I was under the impression that any driver (with permission) of an insured car is covered in case of an accident, but apparently this doesn't apply if you are in the same household? The State Farm secretary told me the only way for me to be taken off the policy is to sign an exclusion form stating I will have no coverage if I drive the car.

So my question: does that mean we need to add my husband to my family's policy, too?

If that's the case, we will just have to get our own policy to avoid being hit twice for this and any other accidents...will be a PITA because the titles to our cars are in our parents names...for insurance reasons!

If you are married and live in your own place you should get your own insurance. Unless your parents own the car and that would be different.

Good Luck

Something sounds real screwed up with that. I'd talk to an Insurance lawyer....You should have been covered unless it specifically says you were not...
