Trying to find the closest place for horse property north of Dallas. Work location would be near Hwy 12 at I 75, just northeast of University Park. Want to stay in the sandy loam soil area but the closest place I am finding is Oak Point, which is almost an hour commute (in good traffic).

Would also prefer a neighborhood that is fairly active, horse-wise, in order to find people to ride/drive with and folks to share horse sitting duties with.

Anyone know if this is at all possible? If so, where should I look? Thank you!

What's your budget? I think if you do an advanced search on Realtor.com for such a property in Heath, you'll find things.....

The location of your work is right in the middle of north Dallas. To have horse property, you are going to have to commute an hour at least, and likely more.

Heath is actually east of Dallas in Rockwall county, not north.

Budget?

You actually can keep 1 horse per acre in the city of Dallas, so if your budget allows you can get a 1-2'acre property in the Preston Hollow neighborhood right by your office but it's going to take $2-5M.

Otherwise, you are in for a nasty commute- minimum 60-90 minutes each way You could look up north on 75 in Van Alstyne or east in Heath/Rockwall or southeast in Kaufman County.

Yes, very much depends on your budget. There are pockets of homes on acreage in many parts of the city. There are quite a few homes in S. Dallas that are on acreage (it is like the land that time forgot). There is also places like Lucas and Parker in Collin County that have horse property available and that would keep you less than an hour. And, then there is also Greenville and Farmersville as well. Those areas would be cheaper but the homes are not going to be as new. I know of a home right now in Farmersville that is on 9 acres with an old farm house that is like 1900sqft or so and it is $130,000...however, the home needs updated and not brick (which is a big deal to some people). If you have $800,000 then you can sometimes find property and homes on acreage in East Plano. There are properties out there they are just going to be driven by what you decide to pay. I'll add that the Dallas County part of Wylie (extreme Southeast Wylie) is also VERY horse friendly...

Financially, you are better off boarding your horse in town or just renting a horse when the itch hits you.

The only other option is to buy a larger property in Hunt or Fannin counties that has a hilltop.

Thank you all - many towns were mentioned that I hadn't been aware of before.

I've done the boarding thing for too many years (with all its pros and cons) and commute an hour to see my horse where we live now. Would love her in my own backyard (along with the 2nd horse I would need in that event!) and a place for my dogs to run and play.
