Hey everyone,

I need some help finding a safe 2 bedroom apartment. I will be relocating to Dallas for a job at Baylor (downtown) with my 8 month old daughter. I'm not too concerned with school districts, just safety and reasonable rents (honestly, I've seen so many upscale apartments that have too many superfluous amenities).

Safe is my main issue. I know I will be seeing quite a few gun shot victims at Baylor and I'd rather not be one I have been looking around the Lakewood area, but have not found many apartments for rent there. It would be nice to find an area where we could go for walks, too.

Would you recommend looking in other areas around Dallas? Any "hidden gems"?

Thanks in advance!

Lots of rentals in Lakewood area, but not really true apartment complexes. Most are individually owned with a sign in the yard (houses, duplexes, etc). Good luck!

What do you consider reasonable?

The Uptown and Knox-Henerson area is nice and secure but you're looking at 1500-2500 on a 2BR unit. Then you have the Village Apts over off Southwestern Blvd that is seemingly safe but yet more affordable...probably in the 700-800 range. Both of these are with minutes drive of down town and centrally located in areas with decent shopping as well as the main artery high ways.

1500-2000 is the upper range for 2brs around here in Boston! I am aiming for 1000. The Village could work out. I went to their website and apartments there go for 900-1500.
Isn't Uptown full of partyiers? Are there any families in that area or is it mainly single people in their twenties? I lived in Dallas a short while before, just didn't pay attention to the family-friendly neighborhoods :/

I see a lot of new families in the area.

As a parent of an infant, I'd be more concerned about securing childcare. We live central to our childcare options.

Do you have that lined up?

The Village and Uptown are both pretty single with no kids lifestyle centered. Both are great places for those in that time of their life, but strike me as less ideal for a kid. Particularly Uptown.

Uptown is primarily full of 25-35yr olds and utters festive on weekends but nothing real bad...although last Friday night our upstairs neighbors were extremely loud. Now as pointed out above, the area doesn't offer a lot for small kids...but they do have pizza and Chinese delivery I only recommended these places for security and close proximity to down town. We keep an apartment in Uptown and outside of the occasional rowdy Friday night, it's relatively safe. You got people, single women walking and jogging up and down our streets for example.
