I am wanting to find some place I can volunteer on the weekends. I used to volunteer at the animal shelter where I lived in Oklahoma. I LOVE both kids and dogs. I tried contacting some large groups in Dallas, but I guess they are too busy to get back with me.
Close to Allen would be nice. Any suggestions?

Try Volunteer Center of North Texas, click on the link, follow instructions and then the red bar that says "start searching for volunteer opportunities"

Not necessarily to do with kids or animals directly, but since you are in Allen, Connemara Conservancy is always looking for volunteers to monitor The Meadow preserve, help with family nature walks, etc.

Here's a link to info about The Meadow:
Connemara Conservancy - The Meadow Preserve

And here's one specifically to info about volunteering: Connemara Conservancy - Volunteering

Operation Kindness, Carrollton, a no kill shelter.
Quote:
Operation Kindness was founded in 1976 and is the oldest and largest no-kill shelter in North Texas. We are a nonprofit animal welfare organization that cares for homeless or unwanted cats and dogs in a no-kill environment. We never euthanize an animal to make room for another. We care for all the animals we take in until they are adopted
