Hi All- my partner and I have 3 kids and we are considering a move to grapevine or trophy club. We are a normal middle class family there just happens to be 2 moms running the house . We are moving from a nearby suburb and wanting an area with better schools. (looking for 350k home value range) Does anyone have any feedback on diversity, etc in those areas? We dont want to move our family into a hostile neighborhood. Thanks in advance for your help.

Dallas suburbs tend, on the whole, to not be what most would call "diverse." You'll find Dallas proper to be the most welcoming, but that would conflict with the desire for good schools.

Grapevine would probably be better than Trophy Club. Also, if you feel like it, I know that Flower Mound is pretty welcoming.

Tarrant County, as a whole, is MUCH more conservative than Dallas County as a whole. In the 2008 Presidential election, Tarrant County was the only major metro area in Texas to go Republican. That doesn't mean there aren't people here who will accept your family, but it does mean that there are some people who will not.

$350k is also above the median property value in Grapevine (which is around $250k), so you will have less choices. That money in Trophy Club is much closer to the median, which will mean more choices.

Where will you two be commuting for work? There are parts of Dallas proper that have decent schools (Lake Highlands) that might work depending on where you will be driving to/from each day.

.
A lot of Dallas burbs are extremely diverse. Irving is statistically the most diverse city in North Texas. Carrollton, Garland, Arlington, and parts of Plano, Richardson, and Euless are also very diverse.

As to the OP, I think Grapevine is not a bad fit. It's pretty classy among suburbs. I wouldnt think about Trophy Club.

Welllll...Texas is hard to pidgeonhole.

Dallas County was the only county of the 8 in the Dallas MSA to go "Democrat" - all the others were GOP. Its also strongly minority.

But, the most intolerant groups towards gays are the minority communities in Dallas County.

Outside of the minority groups, your largest Democrat voting block are people over 70. Most of the people who vote Democrat outside of the major metro areas fall in this group - white rural and wealthy farmers. These people are definitely not tolerant towards gays.

Also, your typical gay person in DFW tends to be from the South and is usually pretty conservative compared to most large cities and tends to vote GOP. They strongly value their families and many carefully manage who knows what so as to not hurt their relatives' feelings - many of whom are the older, wealthier, white Democrats. LOL.

So, you really need to get out and meet people and observe them.

So, for the OP, your newer, wealthier, non-minority areas of the DFW area are the most tolerant and diverse. Generally, anything along any of the Tollways or near a major IT/Call Center cluster. Ie, Uptown, HP & Preston Hollow (part of Dallas), Addison, Flower Mound, Grapevine, Plano, The Colony, Frisco, Lewisville, Richardson, and Allen.

These areas are also the most kid-friendly which is important. The firms in these areas also are the most tolerant and actively support a diverse workforce. And the schools are pretty good, too.

I'd visit the local Dennys or IHOP on a Saturday morning with your kids in the neighborhood you are considering to get a feel for the vibe in the area. I'd also walk into new model homes and talk to the salespersons to get a feel for the vibe as well. They should also be able to recommend a realtor to help you out.

Well as you can see from the responses how do you know?
There's always a lover and a hater in every crowd.
While it won't bother some, it will bother others, and many will have no clue.
I think the trick is how do you know who the hater will be? You never really know
until you get there, and they get to know you and you them.
I'm guessing Grapevine is not the diversity capital of the world, but most neighborhoods
are getting pretty cosmopolitan these days. People from all over the world with all kinds of different lifestyles. From what I see in Grapevine, probably due to the age of most neighborhoods, most people seem to mind their own business. It's not like eveyone is playing bunko 3 times a week and everyone lives in each others homes. There may be some neighborhood like that, but I tend to see that more in the newer - younger neighborhoods where many tend to be in the same age range with lots of little kids.

You mentioned you are moving from a nearby suburb? How was your experience there?...Did you feel accepted? If you share with us which suburb/ neighborhood you are coming from, we might be able to make direct comparisons with the other metroplex burbs in regards to tolerance, diversity, etc.

The fact of the matter is if you are moving to Trophy Club you are going to be living in almost all white neighborhood that votes GOP by a 2/3 or 3/4 ratio. Do you think these people have a problem voting for reps that not only demonize who you are but attempt to restrict it via goverment legislation? They don't think twice about it. You'll run across accepting people or course but let's no kid ourselves. Most people you deal with will be silently in opposition to who you are but courteous.

My son and family are friendly with a lesbian couple and family who live in Flower Mound. They love it there. of course, one couple does not prove a general point.
