I will be driving to Sugar Land area. When I check the Google maps, it gives me 3 routes. I did the I-45S in the past but not happy about the traffic in the Houston metro area. Is it better to take TX-90S (exit I-45S around halfway) or TX-6S (exit I-45S around Corsicana) and bypass the downtown Houston?

Are they many small towns with traffic lights and stop signs if I take these alternatives? The total distance is about the same.

Are there sufficient rest/gas stops on those?

Also, some of my driving will be at night.

Those alternate routes are not fun. (We are from Houston and have done every route possible). Lots of small towns, lots of changing speed limits, lots of police, etc. there are also stretches of nothing-ness. No notable rest stops that I remember but a lot of gas stations and stuff like that.

If speed/ease are your goals, I would just do I-45 all the way down and then take Beltway 8 around to Hwy 59.

Good luck.

I-45 is the most direct, fastest route. I know 6 pretty well and it is S-L-O-W. Mostly 2 lanes and lots of trucks. If you get stuck behind one on a curvy stretch, you won't be able to pass for miles. Lots of speed zones & local cops.

None of those are much fun. I'm not sure where they are in terms of finishing the Conroe I-45 widening but if you can get around that or avoid rush hours, then you could get on the loop or belt and go around the Sugar Land. The belt traffic is probably the least. I wouldn't want to drive down 59 from downtown to Sugar Land.

Main reason to take I-45: Buc-ee's!!!
