Hi All....
We are going to be moving to the area most likely later in the year and have narrowed down our internet search to Coppell and Plano-
What I am looking for is the good and bad about both- we have 2 High School age children one will be 9th grade the other 12th-
we currently live in a small town 15K people...so this will be a BIG change to begin with.....any info is appreciated-
thanks -

I would go with Coppell- schools are comparable (very good!), but the Plano class sizes are just sooo big! Graduating classes of 1,000-1,500 vs 700 ish in Coppell (which I still consider big, but I digress...)

Plus, Plano does high school (grades 9-10) and senior high school (11-12) which are at separate campuses. That is a LOT of moving around for a family whose new to the district!

Just my $.02.

On the flip side:

Consider that one of the OPs kids is coming in as a 12th grader (!). That's a terrible time to relocate, but if you have to... Plano would be a much better situation for that specific kid. The Coppell scene would be kids that have had 3 years to form social groups. At Plano, you're only dealing with a year of that. Plus, given the vast size, no one would think anything of meeting another student for the first time as a senior.

As the joke goes - PSHS: Where every day is a chance to meet someone new.

What is it about Plano that is attracting you? If it's schools, I'd recommend Murphy. The west portion is PISD schools - brand new McMillen HS opened this year in Murphy (9-10) and then HS is Plano East which is maybe a 10 min drive.

Murphy is 18,000 people in a 5 square mile area. We won't get much bigger. That small town feel is definitely one of the best things going. Last night the fire truck brought Santa around our neighborhood and they'll be hitting all of the streets over the course of this week. I realize your kids are a little old for Santa, but it's been a hit.

The main thing that turned me off Coppell is that it's very industrial. Didn't feel like a town to me, but rather, residences in the midst of many office parks. The schools come highly recommended though. Hopefully some Coppell residents will jump on this thread to paint a more accurate picture of what living there is like.

We go to Plano often as they have just about everything. But I am not familiar with the housing situation there. There is a current thread talking about east vs. west Plano you may want to check out. However the size of the school might be a factor coming from such a small town.

Best thing is to come down and spend some time visiting both places!

Will definetly do some research on Murphy....my office will be in Carrollton, and I do not want to long a commute.

Most likely I will be down for a few months before the family moves- so that will give me some time to check things out.....

Ah, that would be a long commute.

While I can see how you could get that image from Google Maps, this is absolutely NOT the case. Coppell probably has the "Smallest Town" feel of almost any DFW suburb. It's a very close knit community. It doesn't feel industrial at all. The office parks you are talking about are on the edge of town and very well kept.

Not saying that Plano is a bad option, though. Depending on where in Carrollton your office is, the commute could be shorter from Coppell or Plano. However, if you are moving from a small town and like the feel, I think you would be happiest in Coppell.

Some of the neat "small towny" things they have (I'm exploring these myself and we just moved to Coppell a few months ago, though we've been going to Church there for years):

Welcome to Coppell Farmers Market

Aquatic and Recreation Center

This park is being rebuilt as a community effort:

- Kid Country

ETA: Just realized this is an old bumped thread, but I'll leave my posted info for later people to see.

Carrollton from Coppell is pretty easy. 15 min. Against traffic. Carrollton to Murphy will be 30 min plus. With traffic.

I really don't know where the Coppell is all office/industrial comment came from. Plano has far more light industry/office parks.

Coppell definitely has a small town feel to it. Plano is huge.

Given your small town to DFW move, Coppell is the way to do - HS is small and all grades under one roof. And newcomers are made to feel welcome.
