I used to live in Dallas. West Plano, McKinney, Richardson has a lot of Chinese and Koreans. Most Vietnamese lived either in Arlington, TX or Garland, TX.

Richardson, Carrollton, Arlington. What specifics are you looking for?

How ghetto is Richardson? Is the commute to downtown Dallas long during rush hours? What about the other areas you guys mentioned?

Of the three I mentioned I would go w/ Richardson hands down. My folks still live in Carrollton and want OUT!!!!!! It's bad. It does not help that the city does nothing to prevent people from putting huge storage buildings in their backyards w/ window a/c units to house more extended family members after they run out of room in the house and the garage. No restrictions whatsoever on the number of people that can live in one single family residence. There are only 4 major grocery stores left in the city as the others have now been turned into ethnic markets or rather more aptly described as "bazaars" w/ vendors and booths inside or large dollar stores. Very much "ghetto" feeling. Arlington is very transient and the commute to downtown Dallas is rather limited and can be brutal. Richardson has some VERY nice areas and you can be as close to 635 aka LBJ or as far North from it as you want. Then you have easy access to Central Expwy aka Hwy 75, the Dallas North Tollway and the George Bush Turnpike aka Hwy 190. In Richardson you can live what might feel like to some right in the middle of a large Asian population or be in one that is more mixed but still be close to all of the markets and such.

How long will it take to commute from Richardson (assume right in the middle) to downtown Dallas during rush hour one way?

I would say anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour. Richardson is VERY BIG!!! Or rather, spread out. If you are more in the central Richardson area near 75 & 635 you could be to downtown Dallas in 30 minutes because you would avoid a lot of red lights just trying to get to the main highways.

There are two sides of Plano, East and West. It is REALLY spread out. From the West side you would stick with the Dallas North Tollway and possibly Central Expwy (aka Hwy 75). On the East side it would be Hwy 75. There is a DART rail line (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) that runs from Plano to downtown Dallas. The rail station in Plano is located in downtown Plano off of Ave K near 15th St. There is also a rail line that is right at the Plano/Richardson border at Hwy 190 (George Bush Turnpike) and Plano Rd (just East of Central Expwy). Then there are DART park & rides scattered around all over. Yes you could make it under an hour to an hour depending on time of day and the traffic. Of course major accidents and such could make it a lot longer.
