Hello all,

Thank you in advance for your help. My wife and I are relocating to the north Dallas area for work. Work will be around 635 and North Tollway. We are both in our late 20's with no kids and 2 dogs.

I am somewhat familiar with north Dallas, but not really when it come to commute times and finding a place to live. We just want to rent for the time being with a budget of $1,500 (maybe $1,600 if I had to) a month. Schools are obviously not important. I really only want a 30 minute commute at most during rush hour if possible. Obviously the shorter the better. We are looking for a newer home, built in 90s or newer preferably. A house is our first option with a townhome being acceptable as well if they are built similar to homes for our pets. As far as size, we are hoping for 1800-2500sq ft and 1 story preferably.

Does anyone have any recommendatons of where to start looking? We are considering the cities of Farmers Branch, Carrolton, Coppell, Plano, Gardland, Richardson and Dallas. This is based on mileage only of course. I have no idea what commutes would be like. I would even consider south Frisco if the commute wasn't bad.

Do I have any chance of being able to find something with those requests? If anyone can offer up some advice, I would be grateful.

Please let me know if I need to supply more information.

Before getting locked into a House lease (which requires bigger deposit and usually a year rent) I would suggest renting an apartment for 6 months to get the vibe of the different area. Since you are from Sugarland, I would suggest looking in West Plano, near the Dallas Tollway, near Arbor Hills Nature Preserve. You will love that area with the 2 dogs!

Thank you for the suggestion. It sounds like you are familiar with Sugar Land. I would like to live somewhere comparable to that if possible. I've looked online at a few houses in West Plano, and I definitely plan to look there in person.

I just wasn't sure about the commute time.

As far as an apartment goes, that's probably not the best option because of the dogs. We would like for them to have a backyard so that we aren't constantly letting them out on a leach.

Contact a major realty company and talk to a realtor. With all your requirements, he/she can assist you greatly in finding the perfect area. I have done this a number of times and it has saved me headaches and time.

If you are late 20s you might want to try looking around the tollway near Uptown and Oak Lawn.

Moving from Sugar Land, Plano would feel right at home. Both are very comparable middle-upper class suburbs.

I'd also like to throw Addison out since its right off of the tollway & 635. Its more of a younger persons area too than Plano. You'd be close to the North Dallas nightlife along Beltline & the Galleria if your wife is into shopping.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. We will definitely be getting a realtor to help out with relocation. Just from the homes I've seen online, it looks like Plano might be the best place to look compared to what we are used to now.

With that said, we certainly aren't ruling out other places as well. We will just have to see what's available when the time comes.

I appreciate everyone's opinions!

I agree with Joyc. I was born and raised in Houston and familiar with Sugar Land (came to Dallas in '96 for college). I think the West Plano area would feel the closest to Sugar Land. Good luck with your search!

I agree with the others. If you're looking for Dallas's version of Sugarland without too hellish of a commute to your new office, west Plano is where you should look.
