This may not be the best time to do this. Why don't they wait until the economy improves some more and do February 29th sick-out NEXT year.

Knowing the way Dallas ISD retaliates I would pick another day to be sick. I feel sorrow for the way teachers and students have been treated the last couple of years.

I'm not going to defend DISD here, but I will say that if I'd signed up for a job assuming I'd get paid X much for Y amount of work, and the rules were arbitrarily changed (without negotiation or anything else) so X stayed the same but Y increased considerably, I'd be reviewing my options.

I also don't believe that's the majority of teachers out there, nor do I believe the majority of teachers in DISD are lazy and looking to "get by" but to deny that Dallas ISD has a problem is incredibly naive.

Then again, their school board isn't much to be proud of, but that's in large part due to the rampant apathy amongst the taxpayers. 5% voter turnout? And the last election was cancelled because no race was even contested.
As someone who has been watching things closely for going on 40 years (most of the desegregation stuff took place while I was in school) I really think things are improving at DISD administration, although there are definite changes needed in different areas. And I think the board is much, much better than what we had a few years ago - we have two citizen groups that are screening and recruiting candidates. Of course there are some snafus and one happened over the summer that affected our schools but ultimately turned out much better than anyone could have hoped.

Gonzalez was a long time ago - the Bouchet stuff is going on ten years - Former DISD administrator agrees to lesser charge in bribery case | Dallas ISD Blog | dallasnews.com What are you talking about with O. M. Roberts - the buiding being torn down after renovations for a new building? I would agree with some of that but it was set in motion from a 2008 bond election.

The reason there was no contest in the race for the district 2 seat is that J. L. Long parent and attorney Vince Murchison was going to run but decided that Mike Morath was going to a be a better board member as he has basically retired at a young age to do this - plus he earned an IB Diploma and is very familar with implementing the program.

Even so a large organization from big banks to school boards are going to have problems not present in smaller situations. However, the schools in our neighborhood have been through many regimes and boards and have always 'survived' nicely...some of the stuff is just 'roll your eyes' bureaucracy and not that serious - other things are but we have involved citizens who pounce when that happens.
