Hi all,

My husband and I are considering moving to the DFW area after I graduate from the University of Arizona in May 2008. I am just starting to research the area and I am seeking some advice.

Here is a little background on our situation. My husband would be transferring with the company he is working for already. When I graduate, I will have my teaching certificate for secondary education (history, political science and I have experience with Biology). We have 2 children ages 4 and 7.

I am looking for a family friendly community. We have family in Oklahoma so I thought North Dallas would be a good location for us but I have heard a lot of negative things about that area. I don't mind a bit of a commute.(not more than 45 minutes ideally) I am looking for housing in the 180,000-220,000 range.

Can anyone point me towards good websites about Dallas? I would like to know a bit more about their public transportation options and things to do.

Thank you all for your help!

The northern suburbs of Dallas are quite nice, and there is lots of new development in the area. Traffic can be difficult to deal with, but depending on your Husband's job location and where you end up teaching, this probably isn't much of a problem.

In the current market you could most likely afford a new home up there, perhaps in Frisco or McKinney.

What are the negative things you have heard about North Dallas?

I don't think you can afford it anyway, the median price is $632,500 and it is appreciating at last report at 19%. See: index

You are most likely going to be relegated to some place outside LBJ in that price range.

I have heard it is overcrowded, traffic is bad, and that it is mostly a bunch of strip malls and houses. Basically that they area has no personality. This is information I gathered from other posts on this site. I have no personal experience with the area. I have started to look online at houses in the Keller, Richardson area but don't really know much about the area. I have only been to Dallas twice and one of those times I was just driving through.

I think you mean the suburbs north of dallas, not North Dallas.

Richardson and North Dallas have more personality, in my opinion.

I live in Las Vegas now, but I own a home in Allen, TX (which is North of Dallas) that I am currently leasing out. The home was built in 2000, it has 4 bed rooms, 2 and 1/2 baths, 2500 sq ft with a pool and spa. If I were to sell the house, I could probably get between $185,000 - $190,000 for it. Allen is a great family community and you should have no problem finding very nice homes in your price range.

Sounds great! We have not been in a family friendly community the whole time we have lived in Tucson. It is really important to me to live in a community where your neighbors are not afraid to say hi and kids are welcome to ride their bikes and play outdoors.

Default About relocating to Dallas...

You are relocating at a great time in terms of buying property in any of the areas in the previous posts. I personally live in Frisco with my husband and we are surrounded by; families with children of all ages, great schools and very affordale new homes. From a small town originally myself, I fell in love with this area because it is family oriented, clean, has great growth potential and anything you could need is within a mile from our home - including the freeway for easy access in and out of town. In our neighborhood people are always out and about. Walking riding bikes, kids playing, dogs walking etc... You really couldn't ask for much more. For more info you can visit my website and call me if you have any questions. I'd be more than happy to help you in any way that I can, I happen to know a little bit about relocating from out of state!

If that is your definition of family friendly in DFW, you'll be disappointed. Kids riding their bikes on the roads of the metroplex are rare as hen's teeth. Because of the climate as well as the lifestyle and safety concerns.

Family friendly here means that there is a megachurch within 2 blocks.
