I'm a SAHM, and Monday - Thursday with a toddler and newborn and no backup isn't going to leave me in a position to devote the best parts of me to motherhood.
I was a SHAM with a 4 year old a toddler and a newborn... no nanny... BOY I MUST have been a crappy mom didn't devote the best parts of myself to motherhood!! (did it for 9 years too)
moved 3 times no family no friends... hummm my poor kids!

My daughter is a senior in HS she makes $12/hour for 2 elementary age kids. she does school carpool, soccer practces, homework and dinner some nights.

So ofr a toddler and newborn... I would say $20 would be about right.

I plan to have children soon, if my body will let me. I hope to be a SAHM with a nanny. Why? Because I have physical limitations.

Having a nanny won't make me a better or worse mother than anyone else. It simply means I recognize my physical and health limitations, and need assistance when hubby isn't home with me.

Enjoy your children, enjoy your life, and enjoy the beautiful weather today. Life is too short (believe me).

We're all wired differently - perhaps you're more capable than I am in this particular setup. In either event, I certainly wouldn't make any snap assessments about how you or I structure our lives to make the best for our families. After all, isn't that a common goal amongst most us as mothers - building and fostering the best family environment possible? How we get it done hardly seems judge-worthy.

I didn't assume you were a crappy mother. I simply said I, personally, balance more effectively with some help when I'm fortunate enough to have it available.

Why not ask the Nanny what she wants. Might make it easier for you

I think it depends on your requirements. Base would be $10-$12/hour. Does she clean/do dishes/kids laundry? (add a few dollars) Does she take the 3yr old to swimming/gymnastics/playgroups/etc. (add another dollar or two) Does she study when your 3 y.o. naps (minus a dollar) or does she do work around the house? Will you pay her for 20hrs/week, even when you don't need her (i.e., you go on vacation)? (Use it or lose it for childcare centers.) It seems you both are benefitting tremendously from each other - you with the flexibility to have on-call childcare and her, to be able to have a well paying/flexible job. As for your newborn and her lack of experience, you could suggest that she take an online or inclass child development course at her college (heck, I'd even split the cost with her or buy her the textbook).
