I'm in my late 20s and I'm relocating from Albuquerque to Dallas pretty soon. I'm having a fairly difficult time finding information on apartments in the Uptown/Oaklawn area. Moveforfree has a few listings but not much. I would really like to live within walking distance of restaurants, pubs and a grocery store if at all possible but I really don't want an uber expensive place where I live with mostly older folks either. Does that exist? Anyone know of any specific apartment buildings or even just websites with better information?

What is your price range. You can goto Gables Residential Apartment Homes and look for some apartments there. I used to live in the Gables Turtlecreek at cityplace which is right across the street from west village which is kind of the central hub of uptown. These and others around there can get pricey but if your single and dont need much space, you can get fairly reasonable prices. There is also the Marquis, I believe, which is right above the West Village shops and restaurants and stuff. You can find other ones close to there for cheap but they are pretty ghetto in quality.

thanks for the quick response, numba1hater. Those are some really nice properties. I think the uptown tower one seems the best option from Gable for me. I don't really need the fitness center, pool and gated parking. I'm kinda aiming for something closer to 600 or 700, although, i'll make an exception for something remarkable.

Also try Knox-Henderson (the Henderson side is really the hippest).

There are some fairly nice places in Oak Lawn that are within your price range, but the neighborhood is mixed. West of Cedar Springs, pretty ghetto. East of Cedar Springs towards Lemmon Ave., very nice and well-kept. However, unless you're gay, you may not feel comfortable in this area as most of the bars, pubs, and clubs have predominately gay patrons. If, however, this doesn't bother you, then this is a good area. Lots of bars, restaurants, and two big chain grocery stores right off of Cedar Springs.

Uptown and the Village area tend to be pricier and may be beyond your range unless you're willing to room with someone. There's really only one major grocery store in Uptown, off of McKinney Ave. Again, lots of bars and restaurants. The clientele tends to be mixed here. Very trendy area, so like I said, prices go up.

Uptown tends to have a slightly younger crowd, mostly single 20 and 30-somethings. The area has been regentrified over the last decade. Tends to cater more to yuppies and "new money."

Oak Lawn is more established, wider mix of younger and middle aged, single and "partnered." Tends to cater more to homosexuals, but not exclusively. Very diverse neighborhood. For Oak Lawn, try bigdapartments.com and let them know your criteria. They can help with Uptown too. There are lots of locator services here in Dallas. Most are free of charge as the landlords usually pay the fee, but you still pay the application fee, of course.

My friend Tom lives in these apartments. He loves it there. These may be a little steep for the OP, but yes, they are VERY nice and within walking distance of the Oak Lawn nightlife and the grocery store, though you do have to cross the Tollway. To the OP, Oak Lawn has easy access to the Tollway, I-35, and U.S. 75 (Central Exwy.), all three within 3-5 minute drive to pretty much go anywhere in the city. Not sure where you will be working, but downtown is less than a 10 minute drive from Oak Lawn, even less from Uptown.

Also, American Airlines Center (major concerts, Mavs/Stars games, very close to both neighborhoods. Meyerson Symphony, Dallas Museum of Art, Nasher Sculpture Center - downtown. Humphreys Theatre (all major plays) - Turtle Creek/Uptown. Katy Trail (beautiful for walks/jogs) runs right through Oak Lawn and Uptown. Lots of independent restaurants on Oak Lawn Ave./Cedar Springs Rd./McKinney Ave.

After saying all of this, I still don't know why ANYONE would want to live north of 635 in bland, boring, 'burbia. Then again, I'm still single (and loving it!)

OP: I'm 29, single (pretty much the same demographic as you) and I LOVE living down here. You won't regret it.

You can find it. I'll sell you my garage for 130K, and then you'd live in it. You'd give a whole new meaning to the term, "garage apartment."
