My wife and I recently moved to N Dallas from San Antonio and are looking for a nice, higher-end gym.

Our initial inclination was to join Lifetime. We toured the location at Lovers & Central and liked it but internet research has revealed a lot of crime & car break-ins in their parking garage - is this true?

Our 2nd choice was Equinox. We were members there when we lived in Newport Beach CA for a few years, but at least at that location, it wasn't nearly as nice as any Lifetime location I've been to and certainly wasn't worth the price.

Now that we're in Dallas I've just learned about the fitness center at Cooper Institute. I know nothing about it other than the fact that it's VERY close to our house - any input on this??

Thanks!

The Lifetime you visited is supposedly oversold to SMU kids and suffers from parking issues and peak usage. In the 1980's I believe it used to be the Premier Club which was easily the best gym in town. Today, that honor goes to Equinox. Check out the two locations in Preston Hollow and Highland Park. Both are superb.

Never heard of the Cooper Institute.

Cooper Institute is a legend in the fitness community. I've never been to the gym, but I have heard great things about it. Most of the good personal trainers in the DFW area were trained at Cooper.

Cooper's. It's an awesome experience and top notch facility. It really does spoil you. However, some of the staff can be a little "over-enthusiastic" with Dr. Cooper's philosophy and their mentality towards "fitness", but all in all they do want to help you get fit!

W/ Cooper's it's more than just a gym, it becomes more of a life-style change from working out to meal planning and the way to look at your overall situation. Oh, and the parties are a blast that they throw.

Highly recommend!

Agree about Cooper. I met him in the 70s in Chicago when he just started the whole "wholistic" health thing. He's very much into both aerobics and strength training. Also healthy living including eating. Not just a gym with machines although they have that too. Nice campus.

Look into the Dedman Center at SMU. They sell memberships to the public and the place is incredible.

Honestly, that's about all you need to know. Forget the pool, weight machine selection, gold-plated showers, all that jazz. You need the gym that is easiest to get to day-in and day-out.

Yep, totally.

Not close = won't go.

Cooper is at least $175 a month...pretty dang pricey. Lifetime is not that bad of a gym. I used to work nearby and was a member and I never saw it really crowded. It's not cheap but it's a little over half the price of Cooper, and much nicer than 24 Hour Fitness (for example) which really has devolved into a disgrace; it's like the McDonald's of fitness centers.

Lifetime was around $150/couple. Equinox is $130 EACH (!) - no couple deals. I never got around to Cooper, it turns out the office building where I leased has a surprisingly nice fitness center complete with lockers & showers for a whopping $10/month so I'm going with that and my wife is going with Equinox primarily because it's close and she likes the class schedules.
