Hey all, I wanted to ask what your thoughts were about the Jubilee Park area (zip 75223). I've been reading that it used to be pretty bad, but even though it is lower income it is in a transitional stage and its been in the process of being cleaned up. Google Street view does not look so great, but could be the lack of an update. What are your thoughts of this area? Is it safe? Do you know anyone who lives near here? I was looking at a house that borders this neighborhood, and I am not against living there but trying to get a better feel for the area. Thanks!

I went to high school with kids who lived there (Phillp, Gurley, Rowan, Congo) and I still know a few people who live there and near there in Mount Auburn -- it's really not as bad as its reputation. Some streets are much better than others. Habitat and some other groups have built homes there, along with a rec center. Several blocks have been torn down. We used to try to scare people from North Dallas or Park Cities by taking them down Bank Street (lined with shotgun shacks many people sitting on their porches) going under the bridge to Fair Park. There was a really bad apartment complex at the end. That's all gone now - however I really have not driven around there much lately except on Parry and Lindsley, sort of the back way into Lakewood. Recently got a wonderful quatro leches birthday cake at Del Norte Bakery on Lindsley at Graham from some high school friends who run the place...by the way Jubilee used to be mostly African-American with a sprinkling of older white people left over from the Ford Plant days..now I think it's mostly Hispanic. I have other school friends with businesses on Parry and S. Haskell - they are white and don't 'have a problem' with being there..in fact one throws a fantastic TX-OU party every year at his warehouse - he does have a big fence around it though..

A new $22 million O.M. Roberts Elementary will also be built there..

I remember houses being for sale for $10,000 more or less in the 80s - and they still would not sell...

Still pretty rough. True, the city and some area churches and non-profits are spending a lot of time and energy there, but it is honestly not there yet. And the area almost entirely lacks retail / commercial.

If you can afford to live somewhere else, do.

Of course right in front of Fair Park is Expo Park and many young 'creative class' types live there...it's just a few blocks away.

Thank you both for your input! I searched the forums but didn't see this neighborhood come up that frequently in questions. It's good to hear that they are slowly rebuilding up this area though, definitely should help the surrounding neighborhoods! Where we live right now (a suburb of Chicago) theres low income all over but spread out, and no defined "high crime" areas. When I read about the Jubilee Park area, it pretty much only said low income and violence, but the articles were old. Helps to have some eyes down there in Dallas! Thanks!!!
