It was very new to us, moving from MD, that there are no school buses in HP/UP. how are people managing with kids in middle school AND high school, and living driving distance? it's really made it hard for us to buy a house since both of us are working full time. Thank you for advise.

You're talking about a very small distance. Can a person in HP/UP live more than 10 minutes from the middle school or high school? I'd only believe it for the people who live very far south in HP where it meets Oak Lawn. I would guess the demand for a bus in HP/UP is infinitesimal.

Most high school kids of driving age drive themselves to school. Some drop off siblings at the other schools.

If middle school kids live close enough to walk or bike, some do. You may want to look at some of the single-family attached homes or duplexes close to the middle school if this is going to be a huge issue.

Most parents just drop off, even the ones who work. It hardly takes any time and kids can get into the schools earlier than the 1st period starts.

If all that fails, see if you can split times carpooling with a neighbor.

I am always amazed at the number of kids that walk or bike to the middle school. We know several kids who put in a lot of mileage daily biking from north of Southwestern all the way to the middle school. Carpools are also very popular at the middle school level. Try to find neighbors/friends who can help out. By high school many kids drive or have older friends that drive and can give rides.

I lucked out with my daughter being 3 grades ahead of my son. She was able to drive him to school when he was in 7th and 8th grades. Now they are at the high school together only for one year, then I will have to drive him until he gets his license in December.

We live on the Hillcrest side of UP, and even when I have to go "across town" to pick up my son at the high school in the afternoons it takes all of 5-8 minutes to get there as long as I avoid Lovers Lane.

I can imagine even the short distances would be a problem if both of you work full time, especially for afternoon pick up. If you are not comfortable letting your high schooler drive the middle schooler, or cannot arrange an afternoon carpool, I would consider buying something walking distance to the high school.
