It's entirely natural to have some trepidation about making such a big move. It's going to be a trip! When you arrive you will notice a LOT of differences but try to embrace them as much as possible. There are some things you cannot do anything about - the heat, tornadoes, North Texas drivers (which are more dangerous than both), and so forth. But if you have your family, a good job, and an open heart - hey, it's going to be what you make of it. If you are a Christian, there are lots of churches to choose from too.

Best of luck.

Thanks everybody... you guys definitely know how to put a guy at ease.

Scary but an adventure is how I look at it. I'm fortunate I'm moving here on my own terms and not because I had no choice otherwise.

Thanks fellas.

We moved from Chicago to north Texas three years ago next month. Both my husband and son made me promise that the move was for a period of no longer than 5 years (I was relocated with my job). I said "yes", to the promise, knowing that they would change their minds about this being a permanent move.

I have not one regret about moving down here, neither do my husband and son. While Chicago is an amazing city in a lot of ways, I don't miss the traffic, the humidity, or the politics...

Scouts' right on here..You might always wonder if you don't. Try not to over think it if you can. Truth is, you could probably be selling your house in Chicago to move a couple hours away, or next town over and still have some of the jitters you have now.

It's a big change, but you're making the right decision.

Come on Down.. Tx is a great place to live and work. Texas is the future in my view, one of the last bastions of freedom and free enterprise working with people. Its a positive place and a place you can find your dream and future too. Change is good, and Tx will change you....I cant explain it but it is a state of mind as they use to say on a tourism ad a while ago.

Adventure is right! Picking up and moving here was the biggest adventure my family has ever had. We are so much closer since moving here.

Just think about yourself in the winter here in Dallas. (Which is quite nice). Having bruch with your kids at a local joint and then going to White Rock for a walk. While your friends are stuck in some apocalyptic blizzard somewhere in Chicago.

There is no comparison.

I know where you are coming from and am also heading down in July. I have had so many emotions, but after being there last week (for work and house hunting) I am more excited. I have a son so it is not just me, but think of it as an adventure and the possibilities of great things. I truly believe all things happen for a reason so strap in and enjoy the ride!

I am one step closer to being in the same boat, where in New England are you moving from TXbound? I am in Western MA

I still have a few steps to go, but seeing they asked me I would bet it would take me backing out or something really political to hold it back.

Hey great thread!

I just moved from Chicago to Dallas last month. I have been here four weeks and so far, I am loving it!

I have to admit, that when I got here, the first few days were emotional, as I noticed how some things were VERY different (I knew this going in, though). I am missing all my friends and missing some of the GREAT things about Chicago...missing Lakeview, etc.

But overall, I am glad I am here...the weather has been (mostly) sunny and WARM and I have slept SO GOOD the past month, its unbelievable.

Oh, and guess what - I got my first paycheck the other day since transferring here with my current employer and guess what - no IL state taxes deducted! My paycheck was $250 bigger right off the bat! YES!!
