I paid to change the floor plan of my house so the stairs don't face the front door. I'm not as bothered by the feng shui, but it makes the house looks cramped and cheap ... as though there's no space for the stairs. If grandma were to fall from the stairs, she'd be rolling out to the street through the front door

Now it looks better, and I'm more relaxed. Think Christopher Alexander, if Feng Shui offends your western sensibility.

The house we saw had a small enclosed foyer with the staircase facing the main door.(When you open the door with in 3-4 feets you can reach the staircase slightly on the left side of the main door). on the left side of the staircase is the formal dining. Please see the sample attached image. Hope this helps.

Once again thanks for all your inputs & really appreciate your help.
Lol ....this is my stairs and my house and we love it , especially at Christmas time when the stairs are all decorated . It's a very common floor plan in the area ,and it has never been an issue for resale .

In my neighborhood in West Plano, almost all of the floor plans had the staircase facing the door in the foyer. In fact, many of the staircases were rather dramatic and beautiful. In my current house we have a beautiful, curving staircase which reaches down into the foyer and overlooks the formal living room/formal dining room. For me, it was one of the things that attracted me to the house.

I don't see how feng shui would be a major factor for most buyers.

From what I have seen on House Hunters those from Asian background seem to be most concerned...just like some them look for red doors--
our current house has staircase and second floor but it is not in front of the entrance--thata design makes HVAC more difficult with an open chimney effect...

I rather like the idea of a staircase when you open the door. My aunt and uncle's house has it, and it's very tasteful.
