My wife and I are looking to relocate to the DFW area and I've been researching the area for places to live, taxes, schools, etc. When and if we move to this area I will be the only person working and my wife will stay at home with our 3 month old daughter. I make about $50k now and would like to make a little more when relocating, but will assume for budgeting reasons I'll make 50 in Dallas. We were looking at houses all over the area but what I'm trying to figure out is, are there any nice areas where we can find a home for around 100K or less with decent schools where the Taxes aren't astronomical? I've found houses for around 100k but don't know if they are decent areas. A commute of 30-50 minutes wouldn't bother me, b/c in New Orleans I was driving about 10-15 miles and it would take anywhere from 30-50 minutes. I'm looking to work in the Irving area, so does anyone have any recommendations of where I find good information or just any advise in general of where to live if working in Irving with the above mentioned parameters? I appreciate any help/advice given.

Check out Hurst Euless and Bedford on this site: Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage - Dallas / Fort Worth

After selecting a house, be sure the click the neighborhood link above the description. It will give demographic data for the zip code where the house is located.

As far as taxes are concerned, they're going to be pretty high everywhere.

Travel time from HEB is in line with what you're willing to do. My Dad lives in Bedford and it takes him about 30-40 minutes to get a few miles away from Texas Stadium. That's all the way to the Loop 12 area of Irving. Google Map it and see for yourself.

If you're considering Glenn Heights, it could actually take a really long time to get to Irving. As I said earlier, it can take 30-40 minutes to get from Bedford to East Irving during rush hour, and that's nowhere close to as far away as Glenn Heights.

Isn't the Mid-Cities area somewhat expensive now? Why not try to focus on living in Irving itself? It's not a bad city in my opinion and you can find homes in your price range.

You may want to give Richland Hills, North Richland Hills, Haltom City, and Saginaw a look. North Richland Hills is one one of those Best Places To Live List (Money Magazine I Believe). You may find these areas to be more affordable based on your salary.
If you live in the NE part of Ft. Worth, your kid can go to Keller Schools, which have a very good reputation.

Good luck my friend and welcome to Texas. All the best to you!

If you are going the same direction traffic is then you are not safe anywhere inside the metroplex. Get ready for bumper to bumper all the way there and back so what is normally a 20 minute ride turns into an hour long one during rush hour.

I grew up in the HEB area and it is nice. Bedford is the nicest of the three but all have their nice areas. After moving away from HEB to the Dallas side of town I actually liked it better: More things to do, easier access to most parts of the city ect..

Other good alternatives for you if you are going to be working in Irving is living in either Arlington or Cedar Hill. Personally I would choose Cedar Hill just because it has less crime than Arlington. Plus you will live near the lakes of the south side of town and that is always nice.
