My friend and I are single, soon-to-be college graduates looking to rent a two-bedroom in Dallas. We don't know the area well, but are interested in the art and museums, Dallas nightlife, restaurants and shopping areas. We want to live in a safe neighborhood, and preferably somewhere with privacy (i.e. not many tenants). I also want to live somewhere that is unique and has charm... Maybe we should be looking for condos or townhouses? Our budget is $1200. I have no idea where to begin in the apt search. Any suggestions of apartment complexes, loft style apartments, or neighborhoods to look into will be appreciated.

Where wil your work be located? DFW is huge, and our traffic can be horrible. You do not want to have a long commute here.

I don't have work in Dallas yet, but my roommate will be working north Dallas. Right now it takes me 35 min. to get to my current job, so I'm not entirely opposed to long drives. I would preferably like to be at work within 20 min., but I'm not sure if that's possible given our circumstance. I'm open to anything in North Dallas and somewhat interested in living in East Dallas, but I've heard mixed reviews. Safety is a big concern for me; I've been reading reviews on different parts of Dallas and everywhere seems dangerous. Since my roommate and I still attend school in Denton I'm nervous we won't find a good place to live. Keep in mind we will probably live in the apt. one to two years.

AS Squirl mentioned The Village is a perennial favorite for affordability, location and general upkeep. East Dallas can be a bit block-by-block, but it's a fantastic area of town that is underrated. If you are interested in nicer East Dallas apts, check out Power Properties who usually has renovated apts available. There are many smaller landlords in East Dallas that you will only stumble upon by driving the neighborhoods and looking in the paper. Give it a shot. It's a fantasitc area of town close to the night live and outside of usual city petty crime not really bad.

If your roommate is working in north Dallas, and you are going to school in Denton, the Village isn't going to be very convenient for either of you. Look at apartments in the north Dallas/Addison area. You could take the A-Train to Denton for school, and your roommate would be close to work.
