I like what I am seeing in Crandall...nice and rural, like I like it. Can anyone expound on knowledge or experience with Crandall? Especially the schools?

OP I would suggest you take a look at Fate. It is just north of Rockwall and they offer cheaper homes with larger lots. It certrainly has a rural feeling to it but is much closer than Crandall. The city is serviced by Rockwall and Royse City ISD's. Rockwall is certainly a better district so concentrate your search in the portion of the city that is serviced by Rockwall ISD. Talty should also be considered. You can get some acreage and it feeds into Forney ISD.

Oh yeah there are some great parts of Mesquite but it is certainly cookie cutter subdivisions. Sunnyvale is very nice but finding a home for 200k would be impossible.

I don't have any experience with Crandall, but I know some people in Kaufman (just down the road). (I'm going out on a limb, but I think the two are probably going to be similar.) Lots of folks born and raised in the area (some go off to college and come home). Schools are 3A (800 at Crandall), so 'small' relative to Texas HS's. You'll not have the "extras" that you would in Heath (larger 4A school). Seems more 'homogeneous' economically - middle class (compared to Heath). Forney has more "transplants" (particularly folks from Mesquite it seems...)

Overally, I think you're looking in the right direction. I wouldn't look further north than Heath - why have a 45 min commute when it can be 15-20 min? (You can spend that time doing whatever you're going to do on your acreage.)

Heath - larger (4A - 2000 kids), econmically diverse school (rich folks and a few not so rich folks)
Forney - larger (4A - 1400 kids), middle-class school
Crandall - smaller (3A - 700), middle-class school

There is really no reason at all to move to Crandall. There is nothing out there that you can not get in Forney.

Also, as someone said, stay away from Terrell. Schools are horrible.

Wife is still pushing Heath...her argument is, so what if we have to spend more money on a house and have a small lot to make sure our kids have the best school possible? I'm like, I think we could settle for a good school...doesn't havet to be exemplary and with the additional acreage I can teach my kids things that they can't learn in a classroom.
