Pilates seems like THE thing to do here in Dallas. Alas it is not for me. But I know a lot of people who rave about Pilates Barre on Hillcrest near Lovers Lane; and Beyond Pilates on Lovers going towards Inwood. Not sure if they are traditional Pilates studios, but they always seem busy.

Hope some practicing Pilates people respond to your post!

P.s. you should also search www.yelp.com and search for pilates close to where you live.

I don't like Pilates, but my girlfriends rave about Exhale's program, as well as Pure Barre's. There is a Bar Method studio, again none of these are "straight" Pilates but hybrids, however, you might find you like them.

Now yoga...American Power Yoga baby

What's the difference between Pilates and Yoga? I've heard the Ranjana's Yoga and Body Works on Midway is a great place...

Oh gosh there are a lot of similarities and then differences between yoga. For me I find Pilates tedious and I'm watching the clock, even when I took reformer instruction. But a lot of people like it. Physically both are going to strengthen your core and back muscles. There are so many types of yoga and ways to practice physically that it can be from a very low calorie easy workout to a hit the wall thing. Most Pilates classes and yoga studios offer free or low-cost drop in classes so you can kind of take a taste. Some studios even have online "free" demonstrations or classes. You can also rent or purchase videos, DVDs, books, and audios to read more.

For me I like the mind/body connection, breathing and the way I feel closer to my spirit with yoga. But for another person they might like the burn from Pilates or the strength in a certain yoga vinyasa or pose.

Thank you!! I will have to look further...I bought a book a LONG TIME ago and actually used one of the breathing exercises to help with headaches. It's pretty cool. I think I'm pretty uncoordinated though and can't picture myself being calm when I'm falling over. But the strengthening of my back is a definite plus when deciding what to do...

Youre welcome. There are a lot of good books, websites and the library to get you started. One of my favorite video instructors for more gentle practices is Barbara Benagh and another is Zryka Landjiwt (I might have spelled her last name wrong)
