A good friend is a plumber. He told me about two similar isses he's seen in homes re-roofed recently.

1. A lady this guy knows well had been having severe headaches, stomach isses and she felt mentally lost all right after her roof was replaced. When she'd leave the house after a bit she'd feel better - so she stayed in a hotel all weekend. Plumber buddy goes over to investigte and begins to feel "odd" almost immediately. Long story short the roofers had removed the gas water heater's exhaust duct and never bothered to reset the thing. If the water heater had not been in the garage he thinks the lady would have died.

2. At a different house with different roofers a gas line was ruptured (he said almost certainly with a hammer) and simply left to vent gas into the attic.

If you are having a re-roof be careful.

Eeck. Good idea to double check some items. When my husband put some stuff in the attic a few days ago, he said it looked like the dryer exhaust line was venting straight into the attic. Not really deadly, but it wasn't that way we did our home inspection.

No carbon Monox detectors?

With gas fired equipment I can't imagine not having them. What idiots those roofers are!

I had a friend who inspected new homes of a certain builder - he found several homes in a subdivision where the fireplace chimney went into the attic but did not come out of the roof!

OMG that is scary.

Lakewooder our inspector has told us some horror stories about new builds too and I don't know if you all remember the houses we rented in Georgia, but scary!

This is why you need to hire a competent (roofer, mover, handyman, plumber, etc) and although you'll pay a bit more, you'll have peace of mind.

Roger that. Apparently she did not have CO detectors.

In my previous home, the dryer exhaust line had no actual vent pipe. The builders just ran it into the channel formed by 2x4s and drywall behind the dryer. (I discovered this when mounting a towel rack in the bathroom on the other side and finding hot air shooting out the pilot holes.)

My parent's house is sort of like this, built in the late '70s. There is a vent pipe, but it just goes into the attic. The attic is a linty mess after 30+ years!!

The funny thing is my dad is in construction/home building but has never fixed it.
