Denton is a great place for a family, don't worry at all about the "college town" reputation! In fact, I moved here while attending UNT and we've stayed ever since. Our kids attend Nelson Elementary and Crownover Middle School, we're very happy with both, especially after Nelson got the new principal, she is fantastic! There are so many events that have activities for kids downtown, like Light Up Night and the Denton Arts & Jazz festival. The ice cream shop on the square is the best around, in my opinion. They have another location now in Unicorn Lake, too. There are great stores on Loop 288 and Rayzor Ranch, and you're just a short drive from Highland Village, Frisco (one of the best malls), Allen (outlet mall), Lewisville, etc. Lots of quirky, independent stores and shops can be found in Denton, too, along with great food. We love Fuzzy's Tacos and El Guapos, not far from the square.

The Target DC will be easily accessible from 35E, 35W or 380, so you have plenty of options! Yea, Target! They seem like a good company, and we love shopping there, so I'm happy to hear about the new DC and all the jobs it will bring to the area.

Corinth is nice, most schools there are Denton ISD and will feed into either Guyer or Ryan. Guyer is talked about as the best high school in the area, but we haven't had first-hand experience with that yet. Our neighbors seem very happy with it, and they recently won the football state championship! All Denton ISD high schools allow students to participate in programs at the district's Advanced Technology Complex. That is a district school with career focused classes, it's really neat. I think they have computer classes, cooking, cosmetology, auto, etc. I know for sure they have a medical one (neighbor's kid particpated), kids can graduate high school and right away take the exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. They can work for a hospital right away and take advantage of tuition reimbursement to become a nurse or other healthcare professionals. I thought that was a huge, huge benefit! Here's their website, and you can click on the drop down menu at the top to check out any school in the district: Advanced Technology Complex / Overview

Depending on your budget and where you work, there are so many options for housing. The area is growing and it seems like new banks open every week, so you're probably not going to have any issues. Frisco and Denton were listed in an article I read recently about the best places to find jobs. Frisco is about a 45 minute drive from Denton, and the neighborhoods along 380 are great if that's where you end up, convenient to both. For the rental amount you listed, you can look at the neighborhoods near Guyer like Wheeler Ridge, and Hickory Creek Ranch, and then many in Corinth and Lake Dalls will fit your budget. There are some nice neighborhoods off of 35W in that price range, which is very close to the DC, but I'm not sure which schools they feed into and can't remember the names of the developments... Providence, Cross Oaks Ranch, Savannah, and Palmoa Creek are all in that price range along 380. And then you could go north to Sanger or Aubrey, too. Personally, I wouldn't go much further into Little Elm than Paloma Creek due to the traffic. Paloma Creek is along 380, but the rest of Little Elm to the south is isolated by Lake Lewisville, and the road construction hasn't yet caught up with the housing, so the 2 main roads get VERY congested during rush hours.

We are currently in southwest Denton, near Guyer, and are planning to move to the Savannah development or Frisco/Prosper next year, since we now work in Frisco. We like the unique style of Savannah, community atmosphere, and the fact that it's still in Denton ISD, so there will be some continuity for the kids. We're really looking forward to it!

my husband is also transferring to denton for the target dc. i have been looking for a rental house and cant seem to find anything under 1500.00. is there a certain area that is cheaper but still on the safer side? i found a home across the highway from the college but am not sure what the disadvantages/advantages there are to living that close to the school.

That's market for a rental house in DFW, and especially in Denton where you're competing with the college kids for rentals. There's nothing at all bad about the area around the colleges.
