My daughter is in Plano ISD (elementary school). An acquaintance has a daughter (same age) at Lewisville ISD. Both kids are in the GT program (PACE in Plano and LEAP) in Lewisville. Every time I see the other mom she tells me how much better LEAP is than PACE and had my child been at LISD, she would have not gotten into LEAP (she does not know my child's score because I don't share them with her). She has always been super competitive and ALWAYS has to be right. I have limited my time with her and try to avoid the subject but she always works it in (along with many other criticisms of why she is the better parent). Finally I looked both programs up - tests seem to be the same, 96% results seem to be the same, both are pull out programs. I really don't see much difference. Can anyone tell me if her LEAP is better or is this just more mom competition I have to endure? Thanks!

Sounds like the kind of "friend" you'd be better off not having.

For what it's worth, I was in PACE over 20 years ago, and I don't believe LEAP even existed back then. So, considering Plano has always had a higher ranked ISD, I'm willing to bet LEAP was modeled after the PACE program.

That's more or less my thinking too.

I have no idea about PACE or LEAP, but I know you are making a choice to "endure" that mom competition. It only gets worse as they get older...........

FWIW, Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD has an all-day, separate classroom program for profoundly GT kids (3-sigma rather than 2-sigma) also called LEAP that does, indeed, have far higher cutoffs than the PACE program in Plano ISD. However, since your friend doesn't live in CFBISD, that's not relevant.

It could well be that your "friend" is mentally combining the CFBISD program with that of her own ISD. She might have learned of the stringent standards of the CFBISD program, and assumed they applied in Lewisville ISD as well. If that's the case, someone is the dumb one here, and it isn't you, or either of your kids.

If you want to one-up her, just ask her how many regional science fair winners came from her kid's school.

Great points. LISD does not have many AMC results compared to PISD, either. CFBISD does have a highly regarded program, but again, you do not hear much in later grades.

As for the OP, that other mom is bad news. I feel sorry for the kids whose parents live through them. Distance from disorder.

So your friend lives in that highly coveted Lewisville district and you're in the one that people are fleeing at great speed, right?

Drop her. She's toxic.

Thanks! I only run into her a couple times a year. I'll keep biting my tongue when we do meet but internally I'll be laughing at the ignorance of the comments and the audacity to continue to feel the need to say them! Big G could very well be right about the confusion between CFB's LEAP and LISD's.

My son didn't qualify for LEAP in CFBISD, but does in LISD. I don't know that one is better than the other, but I would say he's definitely challenged in the LEAP program. He was in ACE in CFBISD and while it was good for him, it wasn't challenging enough that he ever got a B in any class. He's in pre-AP and LEAP in LISD (middle school) and he's getting Bs for the first time since 1st grade. When you have a smart kid, it's definitely a good thing when they have to actually work for a good grade. It keeps them engaged.

You need to stop listening to your "friend." Do what's right for your kid, and ignore everyone else.
