People on the local news are acting like it's a real person. You know that the fair will come back with a bigger, better Big Tex next year, not some used Santa Claus like it's been for 60 years.

It's Texas; we'll do something new, bigger, better, maybe even outrageous.

Hey he is a real person! I have never missed a fair and I started out in a stroller. Jim Lowe (the long time voice of Big Tex) was the father of one of my Woodrow classmates. My Facebook page has blown up with Big Tex photos and tributes, there's even a Big Tex Grief Support Group.

Not for Big Tex. I predict they will try to use the same frame if possible and build him back the same as he was. Tradition is big here, and a bigger Tex wouldn't be right.

A part of my childhood is gone. I was just there yesterday. Too sad.

ggolf- people in Texas value something like is as something of their childhood - Big Tex have been a staple at the fair. I have yet to go to the fair, and was going to try to get there this weekend. Looks like Big Tex and I won't have our yearly goodbyes this time around.

Folks, I understand nostalgia. Heck, Big Tex and I are the same age. I don't mean to dis an icon, all I'm saying is that you know that he'll be back better than before. I guarantee that there is a group who is already planning next year's Big Tex. It's just what happens in Texas. Can't wait to see what happens.

The DMN's photo, with his face still there, but surrounded by an angel's halo of fire, and with a huge smoke afro....

I admit it - I laughed. Am I a bad person?

I'm more concerned with the future status of Fake Big Tex on the Ticket.

I suppose it is a sign of the times but my initial reaction when the news broke into "The View" was that it was an act of terrorism. I know that is so dumb but, seriously, we just never know what to expect these days.

It is sad that he burned up but he will be rebuilt. It's not like he cannot be fixed. Still, he is a happy icon of the State Fair and, thus, also of the state.

Hmm - my first thought was that this was a prank gone awry, like the flaming dog poop trick that burned down the Governor's Mansion. "Never attribute to malice what can be blamed on stupidity."

News just said it was a mechanical malfunction. No terrorism. No prank. Sounds like they're going to rebuild him on the existing frame for next year.
