I would always have a pool.
I have never lived in a home without a pool (since I was born).
The pool has always been used a lot. Where I grew up, year-round.
Here, you can get in around May and swim through September.
When we were teens, we'd fire up the spa in the dead of winter and then dare each other to jump in the pool - major shock! Teens are dumb. LOL.

Maintenance? $150 a month for a guy to clean, do the chemicals, keep it looking gorgeous and sparkly. Home warranty covers anything else - $50 copay. We've had to call once for that.

Everyone in this neighborhood (literally) has a pool, so we don't have to worry about people 'using us' for our pool.

I don't want to have to worry about whether I've shaved that day or if I have to use my swim suit with the hole in it or if someone else is using the lane or if someone else has peed in the pool or what time the pool is open/closed/whatever.

I have a band made so that you can use your pool for a lap pool - it totally works great.

We have lived in homes with pools and homes that did not. By far, we enjoyed our days in a house with a pool versus the ones that did not. If you can afford it, a pool with infloor cleaners and controls to touch at your fingertips from the house are fantastic for turning on the lights, the spa or clean mode. I see the benefits of having a pool outweigh the negatives.

Never had a pool before, never wanted one - but the house we loved had a pool. I LOVE it. I will always buy a house with a pool - otherwise I would never go out during Texas summers! I spend my days poolside in the hottest weather....I simply jump in when I get hot! It's sooooooo great!

We never had "guests" dropping by (a lot of people in the area have private pools...even tho there is a HOA pool).

Maintenance? Not a problem...takes me about 20 min more or less:
1) Skim the surface to remove leaves (not much of a problem, we don't get much debris)
2) Rinse off the skimmer/Jandy vac
3) Add clorine tabs and some phos-free
DONE!
Then twice a year, rinse off the filters.
Electricity is not too bad...get a efficient pump and keep it on low
Gunnite pools are pretty durable.

The more I think about it, the more a private pool is appealing. I think it definitely is a luxury to have, but I don't think I can spare the change for one yet.

I moved to a zero lot home few years ago and boy do I miss my own pool? They have a nice community pool here but we miss having our private pool/spa/bath at zero minute walk. It's almost like taking a public bus instead of your own car. You don't pay as much but HOA with decent community pools charge higher and privacy, convenience and hygiene are just not the same.

OK, I'm Canadian, and I have NO idea why anyone would want to heat their pools in Dallas. If a person didn't heat their pools, what is the lowest temperature the pool would get? (I'm used to swimming in ocean water that rarely sees 20 degrees Celsius- 68 degrees F) That would be after many weeks of 80+ degree weather. :-)

I have experienced both. My short answer:

If you have younger kids it's great to do the community pool because you and your kids will get to make a lot of new friends. Instant playmates whenever you run up to the community pool, and lots of parents to hang out with.

If you have teens it's great to have your own pool. Everyone wants to hang out at your home and it's a great way to keep track of your teen's friends and you get to have them in your home versus them hanging out who knows where.

If you are set on having a pool, make sure the house you buy already has one.
