What about outside of Texas ? What kind of opportunities do they have in OKC or Tulsa ? Is it about the same kind of ratio (30 to 1) as in Houston : Dallas ?

I worked for Mobil, Enserch Exploration in Dallas doing Property Tax Work as an Agent. The standard answer was if you want a job go to Houston. That said keep looking and consider join one of the Professional Groups. Best way to find jobs is still talk to people you know.

Good Luck

Answer to go to Houston did not work for me I married a Dallas Lady.

Your best bet would be to look into oil & gas consultant firms. Two major players in Dallas are Netherland Sewell or DeGolyer & MacNaughton. These firms perform independent reserve valuations for oil & gas companies. Basically, reserves are an industry term used to quantity assets that haven't been extracted from the ground. Your legal experience could be valuable to these firms, especially if you are strong in the contracts area.

Though oil & gas is tough to break into without specific experience, it can be done. Good Luck.

However, the consulting firms have really upped their requirements for employment: most petroleum engineers and geologists/geophysicists are required to have graduate degrees for entry-level positions. Also outside counsel is used in many cases...but contracts would be a way in...having some sort of engineering or geological background would be helpful as this is less to do with land issues than at the actual exploration and production companies.

Thanks Lakewooder! Yes, with my MBA and years of legal/contract experience I am currently hunting for a Contract Administrator position. Any leads will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

OKC has about the same number of oil and gas jobs as Dallas while Tulsa is smaller than either. OKC has a few big players like Devon and Chesapeake. Houston is an order of magnitude greater than the others, which are domestic only and mostly on shore so they do not go after the huge plays which are out side the US these days. But that said an abundance of smaller US plays are pretty active now in Tx, Ok, ND, Pa, Ohio, WV etc.

Fla could probably be a big play but they prefer tourism and a weak economy to risking their spectacular beaches
