Perhaps we view our nanny different than most, but we consider our nanny a part of the family. She has never missed a day of work and she is used to calls in the middle of the night saying that one of the kids is sick and we need her at our house at 7:00 am. (instead of noon when the youngest gets out). We pay her for 40 hours of work even if she is only there 25-30 hours during the school year, but there are so many holidays, in-service days, half-days, etc., that it is rare that all three kids go to school for two straight weeks. We overpay our nanny, and she gets plenty of perks, but we don't play musical nannies like so many of our friends. Plus, and most importantly, after a few years, she loves our kids like they were her own.

I think you have a very traditional nanny relationship. OP doesn't seem to need a real full time nanny to help with child rearing but more a 2-3 hour a day after school baby-sitter (make sure he starts homework, shuttle him to after-school activities, basically make sure he's not getting into trouble).

A number of day schools in the area have after hours care for kids who do not attend there. And some provide tutoring. And there are some in-hone daycares that will do that as well. You can also check with some local churches.

Agreed, but I see more and more of our friends get into trouble with part time nannies because they think that they only need the Nanny for a few hours after school. Very rarely is that the case. The kids get sick, the kids have half days, the teachers have in-service days, the kids have after school activities, the kids have birthday parties after school, summer comes along, etc. Unless you find the perfect situation, most people are not interested in working 3-6 in the afternoon, with lots of other random days and full time in the summer.

I guess my point is that your child's nanny might be the most important person (besides the parents) in a child's life. Certainly our family nanny sees our kids more than grandparents, friends, etc. They are the one constant and we don't have musical nannies with different rules, etc. Also, if you hire correctly, the nanny can provide academic help, cultural enrichment, etc. I know it might sound crazy, but if I had my compensation cut in half, I would strongly consider giving up my kids' private schools before I gave up the nanny.
