Hi,

We're moving to Dallas soon and wanted to know the best place to send our almost 4 year old for ballet and tap lessons. She is also interested in musical theater as well. We'll be moving to the Briarwood area. Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Etgen-Atkinskon has long been the place for ballet training. Mr Bill and Ms Ann are ballet legends around here (and in their former professional careers in NYC Ballet & others), yet still teach the pre-schoolers up to pre-professionals every week. The studio is in Snider Plaza right by SMU- not too far from your new home.

Preston Center Dance (located just across the Tollroad from Briarwood) is an excellent studio for tap, jazz, hip-hop, etc. Again, a long local history and solid training. They do offer ballet but my belief - as a former dancer- is that it's best to learn ballet from the pros who are 100% focused on teaching ballet. Builds a better foundation for future styles of dance.

There is a new studio right by your home at Inwood & Lovers called Park Cities Dance. Don't have a good handle on that one yet. I'd recommend quality over location for now.

Turtle Creek, Thank you for the input! I will check out Etgen-Atkinson. I am wondering - where we live now, my daughter had a chance to perform in the nutcracker this year and I thought she wasn't ready so we didn't try out but I wanted to try for next year. Does Etgen-Atkinson offer performances on stage and such? I also heard of Dallas Ballet Center but that is all the way on the East side of Dallas. I know they do a nutcracker performance.

They do a Christmas-time performance of The Night Before Christmas that Ms Ann & Mr Bill choreographed themselves. Then there is an end of year formal recital with the various class levels performing from preschool to company. It used to be held at SMU's McFarlin Auditorium; I would guess it still is if it hasn't moved to the Winspear or one of the new arts facilities downtown.
